YouthCAN!’s Community Imagination Studio Hosts Family Day

The first Saturday of each month is Family Day at the Community Imagination Studio.

We invite all of the Northwest Arkansas Community to come together to complete family themed art projects for FREE!

Our next Family Day will be November 3rd. We invite families to come celebrate “Family Stories Month.” Each family is invited to reminisce about special moments in their past and design an image that can tell the story of one of those special moments. That image will then be painted onto a prepared canvas, which participants can take home.

Also, Kids Goal Setting week is coming up, to prepare, kids and parents can brainstorm secret goals for themselves and each other, then design a sculpture in which to store their goals, and from which they can be retrieved one at a time.

Additionally, there will be an open painting studio with acrylics, watercolors, and oil pastels. Staff artists will be on hand to assist with all projects.

YouthCAN!’s Community Imagination Studio is located at 818 N. Sang Ave. in Fayetteville. For more information, contact Alison Carter at alison@artexplosions.org, www.communityimaginationstudio.org, or 479-442-8585.

Warning: Children's Meth

Checked this on Snopes. It is true.
http://www.snopes.com/horrors/drugs/candymeth.asp

A very scary thing is going on in the schools. There is a type of crystal meth going around that looks like strawberry pop rocks. It smells like strawberry also and it is being handed out to kids in school yards in AR. It looks just like pop rocks. They call it strawberry meth or strawberry quick.

Please instruct children to not accept candy that looks like this even from a friend and to take any that they may have to a teacher, principal, etc.

Summary of the eRumor: The eRumor warns of a new form of delivering illegal methamphetamine to children by making it into a strawberry flavored crystal or powder.

The Truth: The eRumor is true and only the latest form in which methamphetamine has been mixed with sweet substances.

An Associated Press story published in newspapers across the U.S. on May 1, 2007 focused on discoveries of what appeared to be a strawberry-flavored children's drink at the scene of an illegal meth lab. It has come to be known as 'Strawberry Quick.' It has no connection with the popular Nestle QUIK flavored milk products now renamed Nestle Nesquik. Chris Harrison, a chemist at the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory, says that meth is bitter to the makers try to take that edge off any way they can and have used lollipops, sodas, candy, and anything else they can to make it easier for first-time users. The article said that the 'Strawberry Quick' angle came to light in January when the Nevada Department of Public Safety issued a warning about it.

The Strawberry meth has been reported in several states including Missouri, Washington State, Wisconsin, and Texas, Nevada, and California. Because of the sweet taste and candy-like appearance there is concern about children coming into contact with it but experts say its not been made that way just for the purpose of introducing it to children. Giving it a sweet taste and a harmless-sounding name is a marketing technique to ease it into the hands of any potential victim.

Bottom Line Business Relationships

A U.S. Small Business Administration study found that customers stayed with companies where they felt valued. Another study found that a 5% reduction in customer attrition can result in a 25% to 125% increase in sales. Quality business relationships increase your profit through happier customers and employees.

The relationship is the currency in today's rapidly changing and competitive business climate. By building a series of meaningful transactions, you can create long-term business relationships that
turn your clients into your marketing and sales force. It's nice to have friends but it's priceless to have fans who rave about your company to their friends.

The seminar covers these topics:
  • Leading meaningful conversations that turn prospects into clients
  • Creating customer dialogue that creates lifelong business relationships
  • Motivating clients and employees to tell their friends about your company
  • Creating a customer experience that your clients will rave about
  • Maintaining confidence
  • Building a foundation of trust
  • Defining your target market
  • Creating a solid positioning statement that clarifies your value to your clients
  • Resolving conflict
  • Transforming every member of your organization into sales consultants
  • Capitalizing the three areas of follow-up

11/2 - NWAADC Works Blue with George Parker

Friday, November 2nd, 2007, at the Dickson Street Theater
Doors open at 6:30 and event starts at 7:30.

Let's start this off by saying that George Parker likes to say the f-word. A LOT. But that's okay, because you see, he's really good at it. He ought to be - as a pre-eminent advertising commentator, former Madison Avenue copywriter, and creative consultant Parker has worked with advertising legends like Howard Gossage, Bill Bernbach, David Ogilvy, and every one else whose books you've read and dog-eared dutifully. (Right?)

He's also got a book of his own - MadScam - a how-to manual on creating kick-ass advertising without blowing millions of dollars on an agency review or paying Crispin Porter + Bogusky a dump-truck load of cash to have an S&M chicken hock sandwiches for you. (Unfortunately, you probably don't get to fly to Tahiti for the photo shoot.)

He's pissed off; he hates Mad Men. If you can get behind those sentiments (and who can't?), then you need to come see George Parker, advertising curmudgeon, self-proclaimed (and industry-confirmed) creative genius, and exceedingly modest fellow.

Put the kiddies to bed, and come hang out with the grown-ups, November 2nd at the Dickson St. Theatre.

Doors open at 6:30; show starts at 7:30. That's right, it's a mere week after Vault 49. Twice in one week? Bet you don't get that at home.

$5 for Members and Students. $15 for Non-Members. STUDENT MEMBERS GET IN FREE! Come out to the Dickson Street Theater on November 2nd,

Northwest Arkansas Art Director's Club Cracks Open Vault 49
Friday October 26th, 2007 at the Dickson Street Theater
Doors open at 6:30 and event starts at 7:30.

The NWAADCs world famous team of super-thieves will pull off a heist worthy of a certain George Clooney movie - when we snooker Jonathan Keynon and John Glasgow into opening up the well sealed safety deposit box of phenomenal talent and trend setting design that is Vault 49.

This is a peek into the collaborative design / photography / illustration of Vault 49. Vault 49's client list reads like a who's who of the advertising world. Vault 49's often imitated but never equaled visual style of collages of photography, illustration, and rampant photoshopery has appeared on the covers of Flaunt, Rolling Stone, and Dazed & Confused. Lest you think it's all British avant-garde fashion and stoner rock magazines, they've also worked for tiny little niche publications like the New York Times and the BBC.

Since founding Vault 49 in 2002 - Kenyon and Glasgow have continued to receive coverage in American and British design press - to be the subject ofliterally millions of request for tutorials put forth by internet sub-morons, and also to rack up awards, accolades and general points for being awesome from clients like Microsoft, Smirnoff, Nike, Levi's, MTV, VH1. (seriously, this could go on for a while. Reference vault 49.com for more)

Join the NWAADC October 26th at the Dickson St. Theatre to welcome Vault 49 to NWA. Doors open at 6:30 - the caper commences exactly at 7:30. Synchronize your watches now.

On Friday October 26th, the Northwest Arkansas Art Directors Club will host vault 49 the Dickson Street Theater. Doors open at 6:30 and event begins at 7:30. $5 for Members and Students. $15 for Non-Members. STUDENT MEMBERS GET IN FREE!

Presidential Visit Highlights Rogers Business – President George Bush visited Rogers yesterday! Along with a speech to business leaders, the president toured long-time Chamber member Stribling Packaging. Bush’s visit tops a year of great accomplishments in Rogers and Lowell, and is a compliment to the continued prosperity we enjoy in northwest Arkansas. Visit www.RogersLowell.com for details on the president’s visit to Rogers.

Your 2008 Marketing Plans Begin with Advertising in “The Good Life” and Chamber Website – Let the Chamber help you target your marketing message to reach our 1,750 member businesses, 50,000 readers of The Good Life and more than 250,000 unique website visitors annually. Some exciting new tools are available this year. If you haven’t used our powerful website tools to track referrals from the Chamber to your website, you’re in for a surprise! Advertising prices start as low as $250 to $500 per year, and space is limited in both the tourism and relocation community guide, and the website. Schedule a 30-minute demonstration of the website and members only-section, and learn what’s planned for the 2008 version of The Good Life. Learn more here, or schedule your appointment through Oct. 19 by contacting Beth Stephens at 479-636-1240.

Students Learning They Are the Solution – Did you know that more than 8 percent of Benton County high school seniors have tried meth? During “Methamphetamine Awareness Month” presentations are being made to students around the county in an effort to reduce the use of meth. “You Are the Solution” is the theme of the 2007 Methamphetamine Awareness Month of October organized by the Drug Free Rogers-Lowell Coalition of the Chamber, and the Benton County Methamphetamine Task Force. You can learn more about how meth use affects the user and the community at www.drugfreenwa.com.

Tibetan Film Series at U of A

Other films to be shown as part of the Tibetan Film Series, and their dates are:

Wednesday, November 14: Dharma River
Yatra is the Sanskrit word for pilgrimage or spiritual journey. As the first documentary in the Yatra Trilogy, Dharma River is a timeless journey through legendary rivers to the greatest Buddhist temples and mystical sites of Laos, Thailand, and Burma. It offers a direct experience of lost civilizations, sacred spaces, and ancient traditions.

Wednesday, February 20: Wheel of Time
Acclaimed director Werner Herzog’s extraordinary documentary of the Kalachakra initiation in Bodh Gaya, this film chronicles with breath-taking cinematography the pilgrimage of 500,000 Buddhists to see the Dalai Lama conduct this ancient initiation at the very place of the Buddha’s enlightenment. This extraordinary documentary also contains a surprise appearance by Geshe Thupten Dorjee, currently in residence at the University of Arkansas.

Thursday, March 27: The Tibetan Book of the Dead
Narrated by Leonard Cohen, this documentary film provides an in-depth examination of death and dying in the remote mountain communities of Tibet as well as in a Western hospice. Based on one of the most profound treatises of Buddhist spirituality, this film approaches the subject of mortality from a compassionate and intelligent perspective that is clear and unforgettable.

All films will be shown in Giffels Auditorium in Old Main on the University of Arkansas campus, beginning at 7:00 pm.

Ozark Tracker Society Upcoming Classes

I hope this email finds you well and enjoying the steady arrival of a fantastic fall. We have been quite busy and were delighted to have run a wonderful Women's only workshop this past weekend. We should have some pictures posted on our website soon. It was an excellent group of women who, I should add, gave the best one-match fire performance we've seen yet! It was surely a hit and we will be running more Women's events in coming months. Below is a list of workshops we are running this November. We are limiting the class size of these workshops to insure a 5:1 participant to instructor ratio. You can register by responding to the Google Calendar invitation that you will receive or via our website.

Upcoming Classes:
Wilderness Survival Skills I- Emergency Situations up to 72hrs, 3 NOV
Wilderness Survival Skills II- Beyond 72hrs:Introduction to Wilderness Living/Primitive Skills, 4 NOV
Hunting Skills I with Eddie Starnater (see below)- 10-11 NOV

The Ozark Tracker Society is pleased to host Eddie Starnater as a guest instructor this November. A longtime practitioner of primitive and wilderness survival skills, Eddie was an instructor and subsequent Program Director of Tom Brown Jr.s Tracker School and has recently started his own program Practical Primitive LLC, in New Jersey.

The class will be held (9AM-6PM) November 10th and 11th and is limited to 10 students. I know you gun hunters out there are balking that it's opening weekend of modern gun, but this a great opportunity to acquire new and hone existing skills that will shed new light on your hunting experience and potential. This workshop will expose you to an approach to hunting that is holistic, ancient and an ancestral legacy to us all.
Course Description:

Hunting Skills 1

Whether you hunt with a longbow or with a camera, you'll learn how to closely observe an area and read the animal activity. We will explore camouflage, stalking, and other techniques that will allow you to approach the hunt in the sacred manner, and get much closer to game than you ever thought possible. To our ancestors the hunt was a sacred rite, and in many societies members of the tribe had to prove themselves worthy before being permitted to participate. In our modern world this connection with the "circle of life" has been all but lost. For those of you who wish to rekindle this connection, this class will help you to connect with an instinct that is too deep to describe.

NO ANIMALS WILL BE HARMED IN THIS CLASS!

**This is a custom course and any specific skill set that falls within the bounds of Primitive Hunting Skills can potentially be covered. Once registered, please submit questions or topics on which you would like to focus.

Details:
-Date: November 10-11, 2007

The 2007 Women In Networking Annual Holiday Extravaganza!

Make plans to attend the final Women In Networking meeting of 2007. The Holiday Extravaganza is a special occasion for all of our members. All year long we work to build relationships with our fellow business women and this is our chance to celebrate, not only the relationships, but women, networking and our accomplishments throughout the year. We, the Board, look forward to seeing you there!

We are pleased to announce our speaker for the 2007 Holiday Extravaganza, Katherine Ferguson. Please join us in welcoming her.

Kathy serves as the Director of Women’s and Special Ministries at the Church at Pinnacle Hills in Rogers, Arkansas. She is the widow of the late Dr. Rick Ferguson, pastor of Riverside Baptist Church, in Denver, Colorado for eleven years. Katherine and Rick served in churches in Missouri, Texas, and Colorado and were married for twenty-six years, prior to his death in 2002.

Kathy is a gifted teacher, communicator, and speaker. She combines her faith with the vulnerability of real life in a way that engages the audience with authenticity and grace. Since her husband’s death, she has found a calling and purpose in working with women and seeing them pursue a life fueled by faith. She has a tremendous heart for encouraging women who face unexpected challenges in life.

Kathy graduated from University of Missouri. She is the mother of three children and one granddaughter. Kathy will be an inspiration to us all.

We would also like to welcome Jeff Wood as our Master of Ceremonies.

Jeff Wood is the vice president and publisher of Gray Matters LLC, a niche publisher in Springdale that owns or manages 11 titles between Northwest Arkansas and Tulsa, Oklahoma, including its flagship publication, the Northwest Arkansas Business Journal. A graduate of the University of Arkansas, he has spent 18 years in journalism including an eight-year stretch traveling as a sports writer with the Razorbacks for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette among other publications.

He has been a contributor to The Sporting News and SEC Weekly, and has served as a “bird dog” for The Wall-Street Journal. Wood has won statewide awards for political writing and worked on an investigative team’s news series about a local murder that was entered for the Pulitzer Prize.

He and his wife Trish have three daughters, Kelsey, 7, Kasey, 2, and Clancey, 9 months, and live in Cave Springs, Arkansas.

Networking Group Update

It's craft fair time again in Northwest Arkansas. The fall leaves, full hotels, and slow commutes. I can just hear the sound of the crafters spending money here — sales tax that we'll get to enjoy later in the form of roads, services, parks, etc.

This is a great week to learn some new routes for your commute that are off the beaten path. Get out the local map and check them out.

We want to have a little after hours social for our networking groups. Please volunteer to help! Kandi Everhart (Farmers Insurance) thinks she's got a location scoped that is big enough for 75 to 100 people and we've got the karaoke and the sound set up. All we need is some donation of food (maybe grill something) and beverage. Can you help? Worst case, we all come with a snack and a bottle of something, right? E-mail carrie@soarhigher.com if you want to help, donate, or just cheer us on. Date coming soon!

People can now sign up to receive this reminder. They can go to our networking page at the Soar with Eagles website at http://www.soarhigher.com/NetworkingGroups.htm to sign up. If you'd like to update your profile, you can Click here to update your information.

SOHO Trunk Show at Romance Diamond Co.

SOHO Trunk Show at Romance Diamond Co.

October 24th, 2007

11am to 5pm

Appointments are recommended

479-443-9289

Inspired by the free spirit of New York’s iconic artistic mecca, SOHO’s unique collection of bold bangles, earrings, necklaces, pendants, and rings fuses modern elegance with the ancient Etruscan art of enamel design. The foundation of SOHO is based upon transitional pieces from day to evening; glam up the office look with the simple addition of a chunky bangle and a layered necklace or two.

Designer Ceava Kats transforms the age-old art of enamel-making, into pure, bright designs of contemporary sophistication incorporating the highest quality enamel, pave diamond detail and 18-karat gold. Many designs are embellished with SOHO’s signature gold-leaf “foliage” technique, a patented method exclusive to the brand, where foliage-like pieces of gold leaf are embedded into the design during the enameling process.

The SOHO collection caters to the independent, fashion-savvy woman and is sold throughout the world, from the Bahamas to Japan. SOHO has also garnered the interest of Hollywood A-listers, including Halle Berry, Hilary Duff, Kate Winslet, Regina King, Jada Pinkett Smith, Farrah Fawcet, Sandra Oh and Sarah Chalke. Avid collectors include Lindsay Lohan, Gloria Estefan, Paulina Rubio, Ciara, Candy Spelling and Whitney Houston, to name a few.

Call Romance Diamond at 479-443-9289 and schedule an appointment for the SOHO trunk show, or just stop by and view this beautiful collection.

Bost Monthly News

Monthly NEWS
Fort Smith, Arkansas
Bost is a community-based, not-for-profit agency dedicated to developing services for and providing services to individuals in Western Arkansas and adjacent regions who have mental retardation, developmental disabilities and other related handicapping conditions. Bost is accredited by CARF for the following services: Community Services (Child and Youth Services, Community Housing, Community Integration, and Supported Living), and Employment Services (organizational Employment Services).

Your on line immediate support for Bost's services and programs is now possible. Click on the "Just Give" button below for secure direct information.

Lifebridge II
Elvin and Sally Frick Expansion
When Bost opened the Elvin and Sally Frick Bost Community Center in Fall 2004 we envisioned it would serve the support needs of individuals with disabilities and the training needs of families and staff for years to come. In less than three years, those needs have greatly multiplied. Every office is being utilized, and some staff share crowded rooms. The Community Center has helped Bost to centralize and fine-tune our Medicaid Waiver Services. Our work in providing these home- and community-based services has proliferated since we began it in 1989, increasing 25% just in the past year. We need an expansion of the building in order to meet the community's current and future needs.

The plans call for an additional 5,500 square foot addition at an approximate total cost of $700,000. The design will also provide for the consolidation of Bost's administrative and financial offices, now spread out in Fort Smith in three separate locations. Specific financial gifts received this past year, in the amount of $150,000, have been designated for this project, leaving a balance of $550,000 to be funded through by our supporters. Final construction plans for the Frick Center building expansion will be completed in the near future, with construction expected to begin in early 2008. We hope that all remaining funds can be identified by the end of this calendar 2007 year. Designated contributions can be spread over a three year period, and naming opportunities for major pledges are available!

Donations can now be make online at www.bost.org.

September 2007 Employees of the Month
Congratulations!

Employees of the Month for September are:
Brenda Heydenrich - Children's Services
Eva Pruitt - Clinical Services
Matt Herron - Manufacturing
Carrie Clark - Pre Vocational Services
Cynthia Moore - Support Services
Edna Blackwell - Waiver Services

Open House times 4!
During the month of September, all four Hand-in-Hand Child Development Centers and our ABC Program held "Open House Events" welcoming children, parents and family members, "Back To School". Children, their parents and other guests were encouraged to tour their child's preschool site as well as their child's classroom. In attendance of the Open House Events were Hand-in- Hand Child Development Associates, Aides, Certified Teachers, Service Coordinators and Therapists to answer any questions parents may have about their children's preschool education and services offered through Bost, Inc.'s comprehensive early childhood educational services. Each child/family went home with a back to school party favor and a portfolio with examples of their child's preschool work. All staff and parents deserve an A+ for a successful Open House turn out!

Bost on the Move
Bost, Inc. Waiver Services Bentonville Office

In September, Bost, Inc.'s Bentonville Waiver Office was on hand at the 11th annual Benton County Memory Walk to raise money and awareness for Alzheimer's. Particpants were able to see information on Bost services as well as speak with a Bost staff member.

Celebrity Classic Gives Bost A Boost
Lots of fun, and a giant check for $17,000 as well! That's one description of Bost's experience with this year's The Celebrity Classic in Fort Smith. Every year, Bost is so excited about this fun week of celebrity visits, the Wellness Walk downtown, and other sporting events. As an agency, we are deeply appreciative of the opportunity to be a beneficiary of this wonderful event that raises money for seven health-related charities.
Bost thanks The Celebrity Classic sponsors -- St. Edward Mercy Health Network and Sparks Health System -- for this great boost to our operations and goals. In addition to the gift of $17,000, Bost also received money from the sale of Tennis Ball Drop Tickets. Employees did a fantastic job getting out and selling these. Thank you to all, and especially, Three cheers to Human Resources Manager Sharon Reynolds for her top sales of more than $650 in tickets!

On the last day of the event, the Classic made another presentation to Bost in honor of the Celebrities: five brand new, shiny red tricycles for our Hand-in-Hand children, and a fabulous outdoor grill, complete with accessories! Our adult consumers at our residential facilities will be having some great cookouts this fall!

At the Wellness Walk held at Fort Smith River Park on September 29th, 146 Bost employees and consumers made our own beautiful "river of orange" as we walked together in bright orange T-shirts with the white Bost logo. Everyone did a great job! And congratulations to Bost Assistant Executive Director Jeff Lambert, who ran in the Celebrity Race and placed! Way to go, Jeff! Special thanks go to these Bost employees for their hard work: Laura Lewis for helping organize walkers, Jannia Green for helping hand out t-shirts bright and early at the Walk, Beth Lund for being a great photographer at the events, Jesse Bailey and his staff at the Adult Development Center and Dow Manuel and staff at the Skills Training Center for their wonderful entertainment/tour for the celebrities, and Laramie De La Cruz and staff at the 74th Street Hand-in-Hand for providing a great visit for the stars as well.

Looking forward to the next Celebrity Classic!

True Homework: Building a Home Life

Many people are astounded when I tell them I didn't give homework to my elementary students. There are many reasons I didn't give homework, but the main one is fairly simple. The reason for coming to school is to work and to learn. If students are doing what they are supposed to do in school, which is to work and to learn, and if my job is to create an environment where children ''yearn to learn,'' does assigning homework help me meet my objectives in the classroom? Does homework help the children become better learners?

The time that children spend at home should be spent in activities that strengthen family relationships. As adults, most of us would resent being sent home with an hour or two of work, day after day, after we had put in a full day on the job. Why do we think our children will feel differently?

I share parents' concerns of children not using their time wisely if there is not homework to keep the children busy. Here are some suggestions that can help direct a child's activity during home hours while nurturing that ''yearn to learn'' and building family bonds.

Encourage your child to write weekly to grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and out-of-town friends.

Keep a 500-piece jigsaw puzzle as an ongoing project. I used to keep ten loaners in my classroom closet.

Do crosswords puzzles. Friends of mine do the crossword puzzle in the New York Times each week as a family. It usually takes all week, but every time someone walks past the puzzle on the kitchen counter, they try to add a word.
Play board games as a family. Some recommendations are checkers, chess, Outburst Junior, Pictionary Junior, Scrabble, Jeopardy and Rays of Light. Ask friends for recommendations.

Develop a family hobby. My brother-in-law's family collects antique toys. A friend works with her daughter on dollhouse miniatures. Find something that interests you and encourage your child to help. You will be developing a lifelong bond. That's important homework.

Encourage your children to help with meal preparation and clean up. Fix dinner as a family instead of ''taking turns'' or leaving one person to do all the work.
Designate one evening a week as ''Family Night,'' and do something as a family. Taking a walk, skating, biking, playing tennis, making craft items or watching videos are fun Family Night activities.

Monitor television viewing, and watch as a family. Plan what television shows or videos will be watched during the week. I kept a small lending video library at school with books that complemented the subject such as National Geographic Specials (The Titanic), Sarah, Plain and Tall or The Secret Garden, for example. Watching a video can stir a child's interest in a subject, and a handy book will help the child explore his or her curiosity.

Read books out loud. A chapter a night is fun, and everyone can take turns reading a chapter. Jim Trelease's The Read-Aloud Handbook is a good resource.
The work of the child at home is to build a home life. These activities can help bring families together while still satisfying and strengthening the child's ''yearn to learn.''

The Grant Institute
Grants 101: Professional Grant Proposal Writing Workshop
will be held at the
University of Arkansas, Little Rock
Little Rock, Arkansas
December 3 - 5, 2007
8:00 AM - 5:00 PM

The Grant Institute's Grants 101 course is an intensive and detailed introduction to the process, structure, and skill of professional proposal writing. This course is characterized by its ability to act as a thorough overview, introduction, and refresher at the same time. In this course, participants will learn the entire proposal writing process and complete the course with a solid understanding of not only the ideal proposal structure, but a holistic understanding of the essential factors, which determine whether or not a program gets funded.

Through the completion of interactive exercises and activities, participants will complement expert lectures by putting proven techniques into practice. This course is designed for both the beginner looking for a thorough introduction and the intermediate looking for a refresher course that will strengthen their grant acquisition skills. This class, simply put, is designed to get results by creating professional grant proposal writers.

Participants will become competent program planning and proposal writing professionals after successful completion of the Grants 101 course. In three active and informative days, students will be exposed to the art of successful grant writing practices, and led on a journey that ends with a masterful grant proposal.

Grants 101 consists of three (3) courses that will be completed during the three-day workshop.

(1) Fundamentals of Program Planning

This course is centered on the belief that "it's all about the program." This intensive course will teach professional program development essentials and program evaluation. While most grant writing "workshops" treat program development and evaluation as separate from the writing of a proposal, this class will teach students the relationship between overall program planning and grant writing.

(2) Professional Grant Writing

Designed for both the novice and experienced grant writer, this course will make each student an overall proposal writing specialist. In addition to teaching the basic components of a grant proposal, successful approaches, and the do's and don'ts of grant writing, this course is infused with expert principles that will lead to a mastery of the process. Strategy resides at the forefront of this course's intent to illustrate grant writing as an integrated, multidimensional, and dynamic endeavor. Each student will learn to stop writing the grant and to start writing the story. Ultimately, this class will illustrate how each component of the grant proposal represents an opportunity to use proven techniques for generating support.

(3) Grant Research

At its foundation, this course will address the basics of foundation, corporation, and government grant research. However, this course will teach a strategic funding research approach that encourages students to see research not as something they do before they write a proposal, but as an integrated part of the grant seeking process. Students will be exposed to online and database research tools, as well as publications and directories that contain information about foundation, corporation, and government grant opportunities. Focusing on funding sources and basic social science research, this course teaches students how to use research as part of a strategic grant acquisition effort.
