Maternity Clothes to Donate?

I have a sweet little friend who is in desperate need of maternity clothes. She loaned hers out earlier this year and can't get them returned to her. She wears a Sm or 3/4. I am trying to help her out and find some maternity clothes for her. If you think this is appropriate to pass around, I would love to be able to find some clothes for her to wear. I work in Siloam, but would be happy to arrange pick up in Bentonville/Rogers/Centerton area as well. Thanks in advance.

Reception at Iris Arts on Friday, September 9th, for A Family of Artists: The Kaminskys

Join us on Friday, September 9th from 6 pm - 9pm for a reception to welcome this month's exhibition - A Family of Artists: The Kaminskys. Wine and light hors d'oeuvres will be served.

This is the first time that the Kaminsky family has shown together. Each family member brings a unique perspective to the exhibition.

Jo Ann Kaminsky characterizes her work as "from the inside out." Her paintings are influenced both by internal exploration and her recent trip to West Africa.

Hank Kaminsky, in this new body of work, extends ongoing themes of text incorporated into sculpture and drawings, and what he calls "a clay based discovery of the world." Hank will be showing his proposal for a "Fountain of Forgiveness," as well as pieces in paper, cast stone, and bronze.

Jesse Kaminsky, who moved from Fayetteville to Boston, is bringing sculptures and drawings to the show that are fluid, layered, and textural. His work meshes the technical and the primitive.

Daniel Kaminsky will have a collection of poetry, music and zines that explore the punk underworld. Daniel is currently based out of San Francisco.

The Kamiskys have been a significant presence in the Fayetteville art community for many years. Iris Arts is pleased present this blended show of styles and themes that explores the Kaminsky Family's creative spirit.

African American Heritage Celebration

The African American Heritage Celebration committee is excited to announce the 2nd Annual Taste of Northwest Arkansas, which will once again offer multiple samples of the eclectic cuisine currently available in Northwest Arkansas from many of the very best restaurants. The Taste of Northwest Arkansas will be followed by a hair and fashion show Shades of You: Power of Emotions, which is a very exciting pictorial view of the beautiful mix of the faces and cultures in the region. With an effort to raise awareness, engage individuals of all cultural backgrounds, and support the existing rich heritage of the University of Arkansas and Northwest Arkansas Community, we are eagerly anticipating the second annual Taste of Northwest Arkansas.

To be held on the evening of Friday, November 4th, 2005 at the Fayetteville Town Center, this unique event will promise something exciting and new to our community. We will offer samplings of the finest restaurant cuisine currently available in Northwest Arkansas, a charity auction, and a hair and fashion show. Based on our tremendous support last year, we anticipate attracting diverse participants throughout the state and region.

We would like to invite you to be a part of the Taste of Northwest Arkansas, which will take place before the hair and fashion show. To represent your restaurant at this event, please consider the following:

• Provide a sample of one of your signature dishes (this can be an appetizer, main course or dessert sample) for approximately 500 people.
• Provide a staff member(s) for your table to greet attendees and hand out info/menus about your restaurant.
• Serve sample from 6:30pm to 8:30pm, Friday, November 4, 2005 at the Fayetteville Town Center. (Please be set up by 5:30 p.m. You will be provided a draped table and electricity if needed).

We believe this will be an excellent opportunity for attendees to not only sample what your restaurant has to offer but an opportunity for you to market and promote your restaurant.

The charity beneficiary of the 2005 event is the Eddie Armstrong Scholarship Foundation. The mission of the Eddie Armstrong Scholarship is to expand opportunities and improve post secondary education experiences for minority students from single parent households attending the University of Arkansas. This foundation strives to cultivate civility, economic and social responsibility, and character development in minority students from single parent households, by facilitating cross cultural and personal development and greater exposure to the history, evolution, and future of the region.

Home for Lease in Fayetteville - Contact Amy Robinson

We recently found the perfect home in Fayetteville and are leaving the property we have been leasing on September 30th and we are helping the owners find a new tenant.

The leasing property will be available on October 1st. It is a 4 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath within walking distance to Gulley Park (something we often did!). There is a little over 2000 sq feet with a LR, formal dining area, eat in kitchen, laundry room, and two car garage. The house is in prime condition with three bedrooms located on one side of the house and the master suite on the other with a jet tub in the master bath:) The yard is attractive and low maintenance. The owners are professional, maintain the property well and are easy to work with.

It is a quiet neighborhood and conveniently located to the Mall and surrounding shopping areas as well as the Crossover shopping area. We also found there to be a direct, less than 10 minute route to downtown. It is located in the Butterfield school district although many of the children in the neighborhood, including ours, go to various schools. We found the area so delightful that we our new home is only a block away!

The property is available for immediate showing. If you or someone you know are interested or if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at the email or phone number below. Also, if you have any suggestions on getting the word out (beyond this wonderful network) please let me know!

"Artist, Gail Stoops" by Lisa Alvarado

In celebration of the arts and the Fayetteville Film Festival, I would like to invite you to attend
my first premiere of "Artist, Gail Stoops" video this Saturday at 11:00am at the U of A Continuing Education Building on the Fayetteville Square. Tickets are $10 for the all day event including workshops. (I also will be teaching a 2-D Flash Animation workshop at 9am.)

"Artist, Gail Stoops" was one year in the making and was a "work of heart". When I met Gail I was studying Digital Media at John Brown University. I felt her story was so compelling and heart-wrenching that I wanted to do my first documentary about her. I am also an artist and mother of four children so felt a certain connection with Gail. While producing this film, I came to know this extraordinary woman who loves life and those around her. Her story has helped a lot of people get through some tough times. Her artwork is delightful and exhilarating.

"Artist, Gail Stoops"
Lisa Alvarado: Producer/Editor - 30 min documentary on DVD 2005
Film Festival time: 11:15am

Gail is a woman whose has life has been gripped by personal tragedy. Gail lost her youngest son in a job-related accident. Almost three years later, her middle son died in a unexpected accident. Gail was overwhelmed with the unbearable thought of continuing her life without two of her four children. Before her youngest son died, he suggested that she paint. His death spurred her to pick up a paint brush. Art became her medium to express her grief. Gail Stoops’ life was renewed by a decision to paint. Now Gail shares her talents with other artists who paint with her. Gail's newest series of "Charlotte's Fantasy World" is delightful, playful, and a little bit sassy. Gail reveals some of herself in these paintings.

It Pays to Be Popular at Work

From CareerBuilder.com

Wednesday, August 10, 2005; Posted: 8:31 a.m. EDT (12:31 GMT)

Editor's Note: CNN.com has a business partnership with CareerBuilder.com, which serves as the exclusive provider of job listings and services to CNN.com.

Bottom of Form 2

For years we've heard that it's more important to be respected than liked. Yet study after study is proving conventional wisdom wrong -- finding that the road to success is more often a series of popularity contests.

Research at Columbia University shows that jobs, pay raises and promotions are more apt to be awarded based on a worker's charisma than on academic background or professional qualifications.

Outplacement firm Challenger, Gray and Christmas found that hiring and firing decisions boil down to how well people are liked by their supervisors. "It's not enough just to do a good job; you have to be likeable in the eyes of your employer," says company president James Challenger.

The good news is likeability is a skill that can be learned. After two years and a quarter million pages of research, Tim Sanders, leadership coach at Yahoo! and author of "The Likeability Factor," has unlocked the secrets to having a magnetic personality.

"When people encounter you, they subconsciously ask themselves four questions that determine your likeability or "L-factor," Sanders explains. "First, they seek friendliness. Then, they ask themselves if you are relevant to them. Next, they ponder whether you have empathy for them. Finally, they ask themselves if you are 'real' -- that is, authentic and honest. If the answers to those four questions are affirmative, you receive a high likeability factor."

To up your "L-factor," Sanders offers four steps:

1. Be friendlier
-- Your friendliness is a function of your ability to communicate openness and welcome to others. Make an effort to greet people cheerfully, smile often and adopt a friendly mindset that you communicate through positive body language and words.

2. Raise your relevance -- Your relevance has to do with your connection to others' interests, wants and needs. The more relevant you are, the more people like you. Relevance has three levels:

Contact. The odds are, likeability will increase with "functional distance," such as sitting next to someone at a party or living nearby.

Interests. Having common interests or experiences makes people feel validated and generates a sense of community and personal respect.

Value. Relevance is strongest when the value you offer meets another person's wants and needs. This produces positive attitudes in the person's mind and contributes to your allure.

Find ways to connect with the interests and needs of others. Know what they're passionate about outside of work. Be aware of their emotional needs and willing to respond to them.

3. Show empathy -- Your empathy reflects your capacity to see things from another person's point of view. When you connect with people's feelings, and they believe you're "with them," it delivers a psychological hug. Ask yourself, do you:

Know how that person is feeling about his or her life situation these days?

Understand what it must feel like to perform the person's tasks day after day -- be it caring for an elderly relative at home or managing a heavy workload?

Share the same emotions about key issues?

By making yourself more emotionally available, your connection with people -- and your likeability -- will grow dramatically.

4: Keep it real -- "Realness," or genuineness, is consistency between your beliefs and actions. To be true to yourself and others, you need to:

Do what you want to be doing in life.

Live with purpose.

Commit to the principles of your work.

Be the same person on the outside as you are on the inside.

Be direct and honest with others.

The more you live by your values the more your perceived realness will elevate. If people decide you're not genuine, they will discount your friendliness, relevance and empathy -- and probably dislike you.

"Basically, likeability comes down to creating positive emotional experiences in others," Sanders says. "When you make others feel good, they tend to gravitate to you."

Feeling Is Believing (courtesy of www.themiracleisyou.com)

How to visualize something you aren’t experiencing

It has become a common statement in the “human potential” industry that manifesting and attracting something into your life is much easier when you put feeling behind it. I’m sure you can attain the same things without it, but I personally want to “ramp things up” (as my older brother likes to say) and use all the abilities at my disposal to guarantee that I receive all my wants with the greatest speed and force possible. But I was having a difficult time of it. How can you focus on peace and prosperity at the times you most need it - when you’re worried about your electricity getting shut off and you need to buy groceries, but only have $2.00 in your bank account to last you for the next two weeks?

I had to think about how to do this – the mechanics of it – and one day it just happened. The reason I think I suddenly envisioned it this way is due to two of my core beliefs which are:

1. All of us are connected to a “power source” of thoughts and experiences that we all contribute to. I heard this referred to in a scientific article recently as “a universal, unifying thread of love”.
2. If we are capable of feeling or experiencing something with the use of a drug (such as extreme highs or altered states of consciousness from illegal drugs) then we are able to experience the same things without any physical trigger – if we can just tap into that power source.

The mere fact that someone is capable of having a certain emotion or experience is proof that it does exist. We have only to try and to practice attaining that same state using our own mental abilities and beliefs to do it.

Let me digress for a minute and talk about this power source I keep referring to. One day I was concentrating on focusing myself to believe that the collective energy of the universe and all of us in it would give me the support I needed to direct the things I most wanted in life right to me; if only I could reach up and tap into it and accept what it brought. To create in myself an openness akin to opening your heart to a new relationship, or the unconditional love and hope you feel when you have your first child. For Christians, it might be akin to opening your heart to God or Christ.

In thinking of this universal power source in this light (so to speak – what a great word choice), I suddenly visualized myself reaching up with both arms, palms flat and touching a sort of “plane” of blue energy. Don’t ask me why it’s blue – it’s what my mind created for me and you might see pink or green or purple. The thickness was barely perceivable. Were it even a millimeter thinner, one would not be able to see it at all. It was not a solid sheet, but instead had constantly changing clouds moving around in it. I imagined these clouds to be the thoughts and feelings being constantly contributed to the plane.

I visualized all of us unknowingly (or for some, perhaps knowingly) contributing to this blue holding plane. Then I addressed that collective subconscious – which I knew could hear and respond to me no matter if the people contributing to it were not even aware of it. (After all, things do not require anyone to believe in them to exist. A tree exists whether you acknowledge that it does or not. You are, however, more likely to experience the tree if you do believe it exists.)

I posed my request to my new glowing plane for what I wanted to manifest in my life.

Immediately I started to feel an acceptance spread through me as if the collective energy had heard my request and was absolutely thrilled to comply. “Sure!” it said. “Coming right up - just for you!”

Well, I think I’ve digressed long enough. What I believe my experience means is simply that from then on, the technique I’ve just explained became my way of being able to visualize or feel something I wasn’t actually experiencing. After all, someone, somewhere out there has already felt the joys of buying their dream home or car, or finding their perfect partner and being truly in love, or being in the perfect health. All I have to do – all anyone has to do – is tap into it whenever it is needed.

Now when I’m feeling stressed out and want to feel at peace I mentally reach up and draw out the experience of living a relaxed, worry-free life. If I want to focus on drawing love to me, I reach up and pull the experiences of those who’ve lived a lifetime of happiness with their soul mate (ala The Notebook) and fill myself with those feelings.

So the next time you feel like crying from loneliness, or stress out about how to pay your mortgage, reach up and tap into the lives of those who are living or have already lived incredible, abundantly joyful lives. The more you do, the quicker you’ll attract that life as your own. Feeling is believing. It works for me.

Here For You

Washington Regional Medical Center is proud of its commitment with the Northwest Arkansas community. We are firmly dedicated to making a positive difference in the health of this great region. As part of our commitment, Washington Regional and the National Speaking of Women’s Health Foundation (NSWHF) are partnering to present the Speaking of Women’s Health® Conference for the women of Northwest Arkansas. A sell-out audience of approximately 920 women is expected to attend. Proceeds from this conference are used to support local community programs.

History
2005 marks the 14th year that Washington Regional has hosted a conference focused on the health issues of women. The mission of the NSWHF is to educate women to make informed decisions about their health, well-being and personal safety. Because the missions of NSWHF and Washington Regional share common goals and vision, we joined forces to present the Speaking of Women’s Health® Conference for women throughout Northwest Arkansas. Our six-year partnership with Speaking of Women’s Health® enables us to create a day-long environment of luxury and pampering that allows conference attendees to not only take in the valuable health information presented in breakout sessions and keynote addresses, but also offers the opportunity to network with other women about healthcare issues of importance to them.

Conference Benefits to Attendees

• Health screenings: bone density screenings, written heart risk assessment, blood cholesterol check.
• Information from exhibit booth sponsors on health, well-being and personal safety.
• Gifts from National and Local Sponsors, valued at over $250.

National Program with a Local Focus

Our conference is a community-based effort organized by local thought-leaders and supported by highly experienced women across the country. With meaningful content and a very modest individual ticket price, this conference attracts a diverse group of women varying in age, ethnicity and socio/economic status. Outstanding women from Northwest Arkansas will be honored as recipients of the Washington Regional Amethyst Awards.

The Northwest Arkansas conference is one of 30 events nationwide. Attendees consistently rate Speaking of Women’s Health® conferences “Excellent”, 9.4 on a scale of 10, (10 being highest). There is a high attendee recall of sponsors with a 45% recall of ALL corporate sponsors.

Speaking of Women’s Health® has an impact far beyond the one-day event, as attendees become part of an ongoing proactive process of learning about healthy lifestyles. A quarterly newsletter and website sponsored by NSWHF, radio and Lifetime Television for Women programming, along with print publications and online website content sponsored by Washington Regional, serve to bring information and education to conference attendees throughout the year.

Walton Family Foundation Announces Plans To Build Major Museum “Crystal Bridges”

Walton Family Foundation Announces Plans To Build
Major Museum Featuring American Art
“Crystal Bridges” to anchor regional economic development Bentonville, Arkansas – Joined by a world-renowned architect, art historian, landscape designer, and dignitaries from around the state, the Walton Family Foundation today unveiled the design of a major new art museum and cultural center to be built within walking distance of the Bentonville town square. The museum, Crystal Bridges, takes its name from an inspired glass-and-wood design that traverses a local spring-fed stream. Designed by Boston-based architect Moshe Safdie, the museum is expected to open in May 2009 and will present perspectives on the flow of America’s history and heritage through the eyes of the nation’s most influential artists.

During a press conference, Alice Walton, daughter of Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton, said, “Crystal Bridges is a wonderful way to build appreciation for America’s artistic heritage and create cultural opportunities here in Northwest Arkansas.” The museum will house a permanent collection of masterworks from American artists along with galleries dedicated to Native American and regional art and artists. In addition, temporary exhibitions drawn from national institutions will be displayed in the museum. A dynamic temporary exhibitions program will complement the holdings of the permanent collection. The permanent collection, assembled by Alice Walton and the
Walton Family Foundation, is composed of paintings and sculptures by American artists from the Revolutionary period through the modern era.

The innovative museum design includes plans for approximately 100,000 square feet of gallery, library, meeting and office space. Crystal Bridges will house a 250-seat indoor auditorium, areas for outdoor concerts and public events, gallery rooms suitable for large receptions, as well as sculpture gardens and walking trails.
“We are striving to create a community place that inspires and draws people together,” said Mr. Safdie. “Bentonville is a friendly, close knit town that can grow in a very special way by having a major cultural resource within walking distance of the main square.”

The museum will be built on 100 acres of scenic woodland donated by the Walton Family. Internationally recognized landscape architect Peter Walker designed trails and paths linking downtown Bentonville and area neighborhoods with the planned museum and cultural center. “Crystal Bridges has a wonderful potential to foster connections among people, and with art and nature, and to build a new sense of community,” said Peter Walker. “It’s a beautiful property that will be an attraction on its own.”

The museum’s permanent collection will include numerous notable paintings, including: portraitist Charles Willson Peale’s 18th century painting of a confident George
Washington completed near the end of the Revolutionary War, and Hudson River School masterwork “Kindred Spirits” by Asher B. Durand. Other artists and works represented
include Charles Bird King’s early 19th century portraits of American Indian leaders; Winslow Homer’s depictions of the interplay between man and nature; Eastman
Johnson’s insights into rural 19th century America; and Edward Hopper’s interpretations of urban reality. “This still-growing collection captures the sweep of America’s heritage through the eyes of its greatest artists,” said John Wilmerding, the Christopher Sarofim '86 Professor in American Art at Princeton University, and an advisor to the Museum. “Art lovers of every stripe, from professionals to enthusiasts to youngsters, are in for a real treat.”

Moshe Safdie is also developing recommendations for city planning in Bentonville, to accommodate an anticipated increase in tourism and economic investment. The estimated cost of the building and grounds is expected to exceed $50 million, and is expected to draw upwards of 250,000 visitors annually.

“We hope that Crystal Bridges will spark a new phase of economic development of Bentonville and the region,” said Ms. Walton. “I’m honored to be able to make this announcement today, because I know my father would have been very proud of what we’re proposing.” A major focus of the institution will be the creation of learning opportunities for K-12 students in the region. Resources will be dedicated toward the development of student and scholar programs, including dedicated tour staff, art curriculum, remote learning facilities and a significant art library and research center. The Walton Family Foundation also announced that Bob Workman, formerly Deputy Director of the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, has been hired as Project Director. Workman will oversee the development of Crystal Bridges; construction is expected to begin in mid-2006.

Building a More Inclusive Workplace and Community

Holiday Inn Northwest Arkansas, Springdale
Registration fee until August 2nd: $125, lunch included.
Schedule of events, speaker bios, session descriptions and registration
information can be found on-line at
www.nwadiversity.org <http://www.nwadiversity.org>
This premier event is an exciting, information-packed conference hosted by
NOARK Human Resources, Inc., for Human Resource Professionals, CEOs,
Managers and anyone interested in leveraging the demographic changes and
population shifts in Northwest Arkansas to improve and maintain their
competitive advantage through diversity and inclusion.
As product and service markets continue to grow both domestically and

kaleidoscope of customers without recruiting and retaining a staff,
management and executives who reflect the diversity of the marketplace.
Creating an environment where all employees feel included and valued yields
greater creativity, commitment and motivation, and can be the catalyst for a
better return on your investment in human resources.
The goal of this conference is to increase awareness of and introduce
practical applications and practices of diversity and inclusion that
employers can implement toward creating a more inclusive workplace and
community.
The program is designed to provide participants with answers to the
following questions:
* How can diversity positively impact a company's bottom line?
* Does my company need a diversity plan?
* Does my company understand the value of embracing newcomers?
* What are the steps needed to implement change?
* How do employers recruit and retain a diverse workforce?
* What is the legal case for diversity?

Boost Your Business by Networking

10 Things You Must Do

Networking is one of the most effective and inexpensive ways to increase your business. Here are 10 tips that will make you memorable among the people you meet. The point of networking is to add people to your network. Savvy networkers know that their best clients aren’t always people they meet — their best leads are people they’ve never met who were referred by a friend.

Develop a strong 60-second commercial.
This consists of your positioning statement and something that differentiates you from the competition. Your positioning statement formula looks something like this: I’m [Your name and company] and I provide [list the services you provide] so that [the benefit to your client]. Your positioning statement should be simple, memorable, and repeatable. It should also appear on all of your marketing materials. When you look for something that differentiates you, think of a key service or product that your competitors don’t offer. Think of something that will make your potential client’s life so wonderful that they have to know more.

Gain access to your network’s network. You have a circle of people which includes friends, coworkers, business associates, or neighbors — your network. Each person in your network has a network of their own. When you educate them on what you do and who your potential client is, you are giving them information about your company that they can share with their network.

Listen and ask questions actively. When you are in a networking setting, concentrate on learning about the people you meet. Be engaged and interested. Understand what they do and who their prospective client is. Don’t be afraid to ask personal questions such as what city they live in or where they are from. Ask about their families. They aren’t just business contacts — treat them like new friends. Be sure to exchange business cards.

Set goals for each networking event.
Many networking events are in the early morning or late evening. You are taking time away from your home, family, and business to participate in these events, do it wisely. A good goal is to meet five new people before you settle in to visit with people you already know. Limit your conversations to six to seven minutes so you can free yourself up to meet other people.

Find reasons to make contact. Once you make new acquaintances, contact them. Don’t follow up with them because you want to sell them something, although they may be a potential client. Follow up with them to build a relationship of trust and familiarity. The more often you visit with them, the more they learn about your business and understand what kind of person you are. People are more likely to refer a friend to someone they know and trust. Send them information that they might find interesting such as articles related to their business. Let them know you saw them in the newspaper. Find out what kinds of leads they need. Wish them happy birthday. It doesn’t take long to make a quick phone call, leave a friendly voice mail, or send an e-mail.

Follow-up on leads you receive. When the day comes that your new networking buddy sends you a lead, follow up quickly — no more than 24 hours. Get a name, phone number, and e-mail address. Stop in or call the lead and follow that up with an e-mail. Next, follow up with the person who gave you the lead and tell them how it went. Most of all, provide excellent customer service to your new customer. Good news travels fast but bad new travels at light speed. If you spoil the first lead that you are given, it will probably be your last. Do a great job and you will become the referral of choice for your product or service.

Always carry your business cards. Business cards are the currency of the networking transaction. Some people give promotional items such as pens and mugs but the business card is the standard. They fit nicely in pockets, people put them in their business card holders, and all of your important contact information is available at a glance including e-mail and company website. Don’t leave home without them. If you happen to arrive at a networking event without business cards, make sure you get the card of the other person and send information the next day.

Wear your company logo.
People remember your company logo far more often than your name or face. Have it embroidered on your clothing. Print it on name tags. Pick up a name tag holder that you can slide your business card into and wear it. Don’t stop with apparel — adorn your vehicle. Put a logo decal on your car and van window. Magnetic signs work great. Even consider license plates with your logo for every member of company.

Be positive.
Business isn’t always good and everyone knows it. One lady, when asked about how her business is going, always says, “Business is incredible!” even if it’s incredibly bad. You have to look and feel as if you are the biggest success story in the world even you aren’t at the moment. In addition, never say anything bad about your competitors. No one likes to hear negative comments about another business and it only hurts you.

Commit to give more leads than you receive. Look at networking as an opportunity to help someone else build their business — it is the ultimate act of giving in the business community and it doesn’t cost a thing. Something wonderful happens when you approach networking in this manner. You gain the reputation for being caring and interested and business-savvy. The receivers of your kindness feel the need to return the favor by helping you get leads. Something else very interesting happens when you try to give more leads — you’ll find it is almost impossible to stay ahead of the number of leads you give out in time because so many people will be giving you leads because of your kindness.
