Why Become Involved?

Dear Business Owner,

The 2007 Fayetteville Arts Festival, held during the first two weekends of September, continues to expand its programming, reputation and reach. It is now one of the region's largest fine and performing arts festivals. As part of our regional marketing strategy, reaching almost 1.4 million people in four states, the festival is again producing the beautiful 4-color Artist Catalog. As the festival’s signature print piece, the Artist Catalog offers a unique direct marketing opportunity to artists, art enthusiasts, and Northwest Arkansas visitors and residents.

Listing participating artists and the festival schedule, the Artist Catalog also includes information on the arts and cultural community of Northwest Arkansas. Prior to the festival, it is distributed to events, hotels, restaurants, galleries, bars, coffee houses and other businesses throughout the region.

It is also distributed during both weekends of the festival – weekends that include University of Arkansas home football games.

2007 festival programming highlights include:
√ A highly competitive show of juried art from around the country
√ Public art projects and installation pieces from local and nationally acclaimed artists
√ Concert series from the winner of the international Fulbright Concerto Competition for
Pianists
√ Fulbright College of Music faculty showcase
√ Folk, jazz, blues and classical music
√ 24-Hour Play Festival
√ TheatreSquared’s season opener,The Mystery of Irma Vep
√ Arkansas Playwrights Workshop staged readings
√ Theatre performances by Ceramic Cow Productions
√ Theatre and performance educational workshops
√ Street theater, comedy improvisation and cabarets
√ Performances by Palillos!, Dance Coalition and others
√ Readings from local, regional and national acclaimed authors and poets
√ Bookmaking and writing workshops
√ Multi-media installations

Please consider advertising in the 2007 Fayetteville Arts Festival Artist Catalog. It is a great way to support the arts in Northwest Arkansas, while directly getting your company name in front of thousands of potential customers.

Sincerely,
Daniel Hintz

News from IM Spa

Integrated Massage Spa is committed to providing innovative new, as well as traditional spa therapies using the simply elegant ingredients of Mother Earth to achieve true beauty that comes when we make the time to take care of ourselves.

Whether it's serving corporate wellness programs by providing onsite chair massage, or pampering a bride and her bridal party on that special day, I.M. Spa is unique. We take the meaning of spa a step beyond, bringing the spa to you in an experience unrivaled in Northwest Arkansas.

Mothers, Teachers, and Nurses...Oh My!
May is the Month for Taking Care
of those Hard Working Women!

Nurse's Day--May 6
Teacher's Day--May 8
Mother's Day--May 13

All of these dates are in place to honor the people whose lives are dedicated to taking care of others--our ill and injured, and our children. These are jobs that don't end at 5 o'clock. They are jobs that require a commitment of heart and round the clock dedication. Nurses have to be available at all hours of the day and night. Teachers go home at 3 to grade papers and prepare for tomorrow. And mothers are there in the middle of the night for tummy aches, monster-in-the-closet search parties, as well as the amazing trick of listening at the doorway for the breath of sleeping children. These are jobs that rarely allow for rest.

Now it's their turn (the nurses, teachers, and mothers) to be on the receiving end. May gives us the chance to take care of the people who have for so long taken care of us.

Duet Services
The Perfect Way to Celebrate
One of the beautiful features of having the spa come to your home is that you don't have to do it alone. Whether you are celebrating your anniversary, birthday, Mother's Day, or just the 'because I want to celebrate' day, mobile spa services can always be done with a friend. Gone are the days of unredeemed gift certificates because you didn't want to go to the spa by yourself. Invite a friend and do it duet.

Integrated Massage Spa provides in home or on site spa services. Whether you are having a duet massage with a friend, a bridal party, a birthday party, a retreat with colleagues, weekly office massage, or a major event, we bring spa services to you in a uniquely luxurious way that is unparalleled in Northwest Arkansas.

We look forward to helping you have the perfect spa experience in the space that you love best!

Sincerely,
Wendy Finn

Reception for Don House at Nightbird Books on Saturday, May 19th

Saturday, May 19th
7 pm Reception

Don House
Buffalo Creek Chronicles:
Diary of a Cattle Ranch on the Southern Plains

The very talented Don House will be at Nightbird Books for a reception in his honor on Saturday, May 19th.

In Buffalo Creek Chronicles, author and naturalist Gary Lantz combines forces with photographer Don House to bring alive the natural and human history of the Southern Plains. They focus their energies on one immense ranch in Western Oklahoma that has been worked by the same family for four generations. Sue Selman weaves her memories of growing up on a working cattle ranch into the fabric of Lantz's seasonal diary of the natural forces that come together to make the Great Plains one of the most powerful and intensely beautiful, yet often misunderstood and under appreciated, regions of the United States.

The book will be available at the store, and you will have the opportunity to order prints of these beautiful photographs.

Don't miss this chance to meet and greet one of Fayetteville's treasures.

Valentino Achak Deng will be in Fayetteville this Friday, May 11th. At 6 pm you will have the chance to meet with him at a reception at Nightbird Books. At 7 pm, he will be speaking at the Fayetteville Public Library.

What Is the What, co-written by Dave Eggers, is the novelized autobiography of Valentino Achak Deng, from his pre-war life in Marial Bai, to his resettlement in the United States. Separated from his family, Valentino becomes a refugee in war-ravaged southern Sudan. His travels bring him in contact with enemy soldiers, with liberation rebels, with hyenas and lions, with disease and starvation, and with deadly murahaleen (militias on horseback)-the same sort who currently terrorize Darfur.

Valentino will be discussing his life described in the book as well as his efforts to raise funds for his home country.

All of the proceeds from What Is the What will go to aiding the Sudanese in America and Sudan. Created and overseen by Valentino, the Foundation's first aim will be the rebuilding of his hometown of Marial Bai, in southern Sudan. Every purchase of the book constitutes a donation to The VAD Foundation.

Turning the Generational Dial: A Plea to Boomers, Gen X and Gen Y
By Carol Orsborn, PhD

Carol Orsborn argues that instead of participating in a complicated generational tug-of-war of who is more relevant, Gen X and Gen Y must learn from Boomers because these following generations will also face the same elongated lifespans and increased vitality

Keyloggers – A Risk of Using Computers That Are Not Ours

Technology has changed the way we do business and the way we live our lives. Fifteen years ago, if we wanted to check the balance or purchases of our credit card account our only option was to call the credit card’s automated phone system or wait for our monthly statement. Now we have the ability to go online and check that balance at any moment. And better yet, we can do it from anywhere in the world provided there is a computer with an internet connection.

Let’s pretend you are vacationing on a remote island. You’ve left the laptop and Blackberry – maybe the kids, too – at home. Fortunately, a wise businessman on this remote island knows that you cannot resist checking your email or finances. So this businessman creates an Internet café for all travelers to surf the internet from paradise. But should you be checking your email from this kiosk?

In general, it is not a good idea to use a public computer to access private information. The reason is simple; it is very possible and probable that a keylogger is installed on that computer. Keyloggers can record keystrokes, mouse movements, and even capture screen shots. The keyloggers can store the data on the computer for someone to retrieve at a later date or it can send it automatically to another computer on the other side of the world. It is possible for an internet café to prevent keylogging software from being installed on their kiosks, but is it right to assume that the café operators are competent and trustworthy?

If you must use a public computer, here is a good tip. When entering your username and password at a login page, type one character of your password. Then click somewhere else in the browser and type a few random characters. Then click back in the password field and type the next character of your password. Repeat these steps until you have entered your username and password.

No solution is foolproof; this tip will not work for every keylogger and will not deter a determined thief. A thief could still figure out a way to get your password by matching up the keystrokes with mouse movements, however, this takes a thief more time. Hopefully the thief will move on to another individual who typed in their username and password without using this tip.

Regulations issued under the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA) and Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC) have changed the way banks address the security of our information. E-Trade and Credit Suisse are just two companies that provide two-factor authentication tokens to customers. These tokens and similar forms of two-factor authentication will minimize a customer’s concern using public computers.

In summary, use caution when entering your password on public computers. If you must log into a public computer make sure to change your password from your computer when you get home. Inquire if your bank, credit card, or other financial institution offers two-factor authentication to secure your information. Remember, computers in public places are a lot like liquids in public places: if it is not yours, you shouldn’t touch it.

Rolf Gates Workshop

AYC Friends,

We are so lucky to have Rolf Gates coming to our center to do a workshop! His book “Meditations from the Mat”, first published in 2002, has already become a classic that many consider essential to their yoga library. This inspirational book of daily meditations enhances focus and mindfulness in a yoga practice, and enriches our daily lives.

“ I see my workshop as a way to exercise the muscles that really count, the muscles of the heart, the muscles of the Spirit” Rolf Gates

Some of you have expressed concern that this workshop may be too hard (due to the words “come prepared to sweat”J) BUT Rolf has assured us that everyone is welcome and those that want to be challenged physically will and those who want to “sweat mentally and spiritually” will.

In addition to being a Yoga teacher and author, Rolf has been a social worker, EMT, addictions counselor, and Airborne Army Ranger. He is a featured
speaker at corporate training on “the inner path of leadership” and was named Boston’s Best Yoga Teacher. He is an avid marathon runner, distance cyclist, and champion wrestler. And he is a descendant of 6 generations of ministers.

Because of Amy Weintraub’s workshop being so close to Rolf’s some of you may have missed the “early bird” registration date for Rolf.
So we have extended it ($165) to May 20th for those of you wanting to save some money and come to this amazing event.

Life is short, seize this opportunity to meet and train with an inspired and compassionate teacher!

Love from all of us at AYC!

Mother's Day Gift Ideas from Heifer Project International

Dear Heifer Friend,

Your mother helped make you who you are today, and Mother's Day is a special time to show your love and thanks. Here's a great way to do that: Give a gift in Mom's honor or memory to Heifer International to help mothers all over the world.

By donating one of our special "Mother's Baskets," your mom's love will be shared with other mothers from Argentina to Zimbabwe who want to care for their children the way your mother took care of you. Women like Bernadina Maria Salgado, from Nicaragua.

"Before, I had no way to help provide for my family, but today I am the breadwinner!"

Bernadina had always struggled to feed her family, especially after Hurricane Mitch destroyed her tiny community on the banks of Nicaragua's El Zopilote River.

Now, Bernadina and her family are participating in a new Heifer project, learning how to turn the hens they received from Heifer into a source of income.

And another mother, Rosa Maria Diaz Lopez, feels blessed because her well-fed children no longer get sick.

"Thanks to God they are healthy because of these chickens. With the income we receive from the sale of eggs we buy soap and things for our family."
Honor or remember your mother with a gift to Heifer International and help women like Bernadina and Rosa provide a much needed source of income and nutrition for their families.

For more than 60 years, Heifer International has provided livestock and environmentally sound agricultural training to improve the lives of mothers all around the world who struggle daily for dependable sources of food and income. Recipients of these animals "Pass on the Gift" by giving the offspring of their livestock to others - creating an ever widening circle of hope that has benefited 38 million people since 1944. Give today to help us continue this work.

Stephanie Wooten to Give Women's Self Defense Presentation at Women In Networking Luncheon

A violent act occurs once every fifteen seconds in the United States. One out of every four women in the United States currently over 21 years of age will experience a violent crime in her lifetime, and each year six million women are beaten by an abusive husband or boyfriend. Thousands of those beatings end in murder. In order to be prepared it is important for us to stay alert and know how to fight back. Women In Networking wants to be certain that if and when a time of danger comes for any of us, we will know how to adequately defend ourselves. On May 23rd our guest speaker will be Stephanie Wooten, an instructor who teaches women's self defense for the Bentonville Police Department.

Don't miss this great opportunity to learn a few basic principles of self defense. This world is too dangerous for women to be unprepared for violent attacks. The information presented at this event could save your life.

For information on signing up for the 12 hour self defense class offered by the Bentonville Police Department, call (479) 271-5986 or visit this web site: http://www.bentonvillear.com/police_self_defense.html

New Yoga/Pilates lunch class near Scottsdale Center

Good Morning,

I will be offering a lunch Yoga/Pilates class from 1PM - 2PM Mondays and
Wednesdays starting June 4th. We will be in a dance studio just off Walnut
on 37th Street. 37th is between Happy Bays car wash and Bozeman-Hoff. It
is a great studio with plenty of room, so lets see if we can fill it up.

Cost per class is $10.

Directions to the studio -- turn onto 37th (toward Summerhill) and make an
immediate right turn onto a new little street (I'll get the name the next
time I go over). Then you will see a building on the left with a deck with
railing. There is no large sign, but just drive around to the right side of
the building/deck and there is a small door with a sign on the door.

So schedule the time into your MS Outlook or daily planner, and come join
us. This is a great way to strengthen, stretch and relieve some stress
during the day. Please bring your mat.

Thanks.

Pamela

PS I will still be offering the lunch class at Wolf's Grin Martial Arts
Academy on Bella Vista Road in Bentonville Wed. 11:30 - 12:30 and Fridays
12:30 - 1:30. The new class will mean that I have to scoot right after the
Wolf's Grin Wednesday class, so if you bring a change of clothes you will
either have to skip relaxation, or change back at the office. Thanks.

Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.
