DeadFred.com Needs Your Help!

Joe Bott here. I'm coming to you for help with solving a mystery.

Can You Help Us Identify This Photo?

Found among the belongings of a Scandinavian family in Saskatchewan, Canada, the photograph was taken in New York. The family name at the time was Pedersen, later changed to Ekstrand. The image appears to be from the 1870s-1890s or 1860s-1900s. There is speculation regarding the gender of the child, but the photo submitter notes that there is a bow in the child's hair, which is difficult to see in the scan yet apparent in the original.

Prior research of the Photographer A. Po. deGroat of Bath and Hammondsport, NY, indicates that (professionally at least) his line seems to be extinct. The submitter tells us no branch of her family has ever lived in that part of the world. This is a true mystery!

While the clues and tidbits above are just the humble beginnings of what I suspect will become a very interesting genealogy reunion tale, there is definite power in collaboration.

Please review the details of the photograph here, and forward this information along to your fellow sleuths to help us increase the possibility of identifying this photograph. The identifying genealogist will receive a FREE download of DeadFred.com's The Desperate Genealogist's Idea Book (an invaluable resource packed with articles and case studies that reveal tips, shortcuts and resources from genealogy's top writers)!

Why the Push to Identify This Particular Photo?

I recently received a call from the folks at the new television series Ancestors in the Attic hosted by Jeff Douglas and produced by Toronto's Primitive Entertainment.

A "Friend of Fred" who found an ancestor on DeadFred.com dropped our name (Thank you, fair friend!), and now we're working with the show to possibly highlight some DeadFred.com discoveries during the series. Ancestors in the Attic also submitted the photo pictured above from one of its viewers in hopes of making a connection.

With 1,032 reported photo reunions through DeadFred.com already, I believe that identifying this mystery photo is well within the reach of our talented community of DeadFred.com members and visitors.

So...without further ado: Fellow genealogists, thank you in advance for lending us your thinking caps along with your brilliant minds, and I hope to hear from you soon. Again, click here for photo details.

Please send all clues and progress reports to archivists@deadfred.com with the subject line, "Attn: Joe - You're Going to Love This!" (I love getting e-mail with that subject line.)

Long Live DeadFred.com!
Joe

Sixth Annual Crimson and Cream Ball

The Northwest Arkansas Area Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., will host its Sixth Annual Crimson and Cream Ball on Saturday, February 10, 2007 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Rogers, Arkansas. The Crimson and Cream Ball is a fundraiser for the Nola Holt Royster Living Legacy Scholarship and the Bethany “Dee“ McClendon Graduate Scholarship.

The Nola Holt Royster Living Legacy Scholarship was established to honor the memory of Dr. Nola Holt Royster, a lifelong and dedicated member of our organization and prominent figure in the Northwest Arkansas community. The Nola Holt Royster Living Legacy Scholarship provides financial assistance to African-American women who are leaders and will pursue a degree at a college or university. Last year’s efforts resulted in $20,000 raised for undergraduate scholarships.

The Bethany “Dee” McClendon Graduate Scholarship was established to honor the memory of a former member of our chapter and law school student at the University of Arkansas. The Bethany “Dee” McClendon Graduate Scholarship provides financial assistance to current graduate students attending the University of Arkansas. Last year’s efforts resulted in two scholarships being awarded for a total of $2,500.

Last year’s successful scholarship program resulted in a total of $22,500 in awards. However pleased we are with last year’s efforts, we understand the outstanding unmet need in our community for scholarship assistance. With that in mind, this year’s goal is to provide $50,000 for scholarships to Northwest Arkansas Area students.

Join us every Friday for the Creative Referral Network at the Arkansas Room at Embassy Suites (behind the Cedar Creek Bistro) at 8:00 a.m. If that room is booked for another group, we’ll meet in the Cedar Creek Bistro. Bring business cards for at least 35.

Open Mic Blues Jam at the Bayou

Every Thursday night at the Bayou in Rogers (behind Price Cutter and across from Eureka Pizza on Dixieland), my husband and I go to Open Mic Blues Jam. It’s the coolest thing. The house band, The Larrys (and there isn’t one Larry in the group) open up at 9:00 p.m. The local musicians start wandering in with their guitars, amplifiers, drum sticks, harmonicas, etc. and sign up. Throughout the night, the musicians switch out. These people are from all walks of life and there are some killer blues guys (and gals) in the area. One of the Larrys is a guy named Danny that works in the Miller Brewing Company supplier office here. His wife told me about waking up in the middle of the night when they were first together. Danny was in the bathroom with the light on and the door closed. Thinking he was sick, she got up to check on him and found him in the bathroom with his guitar trying to figure out a chord. That, my friends, is what the blues will do to you. Yeah, buddy. It’s all about the music. Tom and I are there most Thursdays. You’re welcome to sit with us anytime.

GreenInBlue receives NSF funds to study HYDOZ "TM" at drinking water treatment facility; Addresses need for improved ozone treatment of drinking water

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (December 28, 2006) -- BlueInGreen, LLC understands the need to minimize chlorine use in drinking water treatment facilities, so they have worked diligently to develop alternative disinfection technologies. The National Science Foundation (NSF) recognized their efforts and gave the company a $100,000 Phase I Small Business Innovation Research award recently to study the implementation of BlueInGreen's patent-pending ozone dissolution technology, Hyperconcentrated Dissolved Ozone treatment system (HYDOZ "TM").

Beaver Water District in Northwest Arkansas and the Tulsa Metropolitan Utility Authority are collaborators on the project. The HYDOZ "TM" system will be installed at the Tulsa Metropolitan Utility Authority A.B. Jewell pilot-plant facility. Based upon results of the first phase of this project, BlueInGreen will develop a full-scale prototype for the facility.

HYDOZ "TM" improves the safety and quality of drinking water by delivering a concentrated stream of dissolved ozone in water. Since ozone quickly converts into oxygen following treatment, it has no lasting impact on the environment. Traditional ozonation technologies are not efficient at dissolving ozone bubbles into water, resulting in hazardous ozone off-gassing that must be captured. This adds significant expense to ozonation treatment, which has limited its application in favor of chlorine pretreatment.

The use of chlorine in drinking water pretreatment has been linked to the formation of harmful disinfection byproducts (DBPs). The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recently implemented a Stage 2 Disinfection Byproducts Rule to reduce their presence in the drinking water supply. BlueInGreen's HYDOZ "TM" technology may be applied at key steps within the drinking water treatment process to improve disinfection of the drinking water supply, remove odorous and foul-tasting compounds, and to minimize the formation of DBPs.

BlueInGreen Chief Scientific Officer Dr. Marty Matlock is excited about the potential of the HYDOZ "TM" system to solve drinking water problems. "The current need to minimize the use of chlorine in drinking water treatment facilities across the nation gives high priority to the development of alternative disinfection technologies," Matlock said. "We believe that this collaborative effort between BlueInGreen, Beaver Water District and the Tulsa Metropolitan Utility Authority will provide advances in ozonation technology that will solve many drinking water problems."

For more information about BlueInGreen, contact Greg Magness at (479) 527-6378 or visit the website at www.blueingreen.biz.

Five New Year’s Resolutions You Should Keep by Carrie Perrien Smith

Ahhhh … It’s that time of year — that magical season when people make those resolutions that will make their life better. Small business owners are no different. We make them, too, only we break them faster than the weight-loss resolution. Here is a list of resolutions that small businesses should vow to make and keep.

Resolution #1: Network More

As I sat at the first official networking event of the year, I couldn’t believe the number of people who said they resolved to do more networking. They realized that it was important to their business and they were going to start today. My expertise is networking but I was still surprised. They spoke of it as seriously as they would if they were about to try to stop smoking after years of bitter attempts to quit. The networking group had spiked in size similar to the way the fitness center attendance increases in January.

Networking is a great way to develop prospects and market your business. Most powerful of all, though, is the way that networking enables you to build relationships, learn about others through meaningful conversation, and help other businesses by providing nice, warm, gift-wrapped leads. It’s interesting that people who I spoke with on January 2 were people that I had made contact with during the previous October, November, and December. I had top-of-mind awareness because I stayed in the networking game all year.
