Darren LaCroix to Speak at Rogers Toastmasters Club

Keynote Speaker • Author • Comedian
In 2001, Darren LaCroix, The World Champion of Public Speaking, outspoke 25,000 contestants from 14 countries to win that title. Since that victory, Darren has traveled the world demystifying the process of creating a powerful speech. He has roused audiences in faraway places like Oman, Malaysia, and Taiwan with his inspirational journey from first-rate chump to first-class champ, proving anything is possible if you are willing to work for it.
Darren may have been "born without a funny bone in my body," but he possessed the desire to learn and the willingness to fail necessary to achieve his dream. The self-proclaimed "student of comedy" is living proof that humor is a skill that can be learned.
From the Boston Globe to Northwest Flight Magazine to the LA Times, Darren LaCroix has been interviewed and quoted. Classic terms like Funsuckers - people in organizations that suck the fun out of everything- are quickly becoming part of pop corporate culture. "He's revolutionized the way we hold meetings," a client told Business Today.com.
His successful book, Laugh & Get Rich: How to Profit from Humor in Any Business, contains interviews with corporate executives who share his philosophy. Now translated into three languages, it is a mainstay on business bookshelves.
An award-winning producer, his film Living and Laughing with Cancer: A Comedian's Journey was honored at the Worldfest Houston film festival for its groundbreaking insights into humor and healing. The inspirational documentary about his best friend's battle with cancer, brings humor and hope to those touched by life-threatening conditions.
Darrin will speak at the Roger’s Toastmaster Club
Carroll Electric Corp. Meeting Room

My Washer Does Not Spin

Today was one of those days. Yes, the kind that makes you want to throw in the towel.

After spending a day dealing with various and sundry technical problems, pesky tasks and surly customer service people, I decided to do just that—literally.

Late this afternoon, I tore myself away from my sadly, yet aptly, described "non-billable" work day to do some laundry—a nice housekeeping task that has an easy enough beginning and a tidy ending that results in clean sheets, neatly folded towels in the hallway closet and, my personal favorite, one less thing to do on my mental "to-do" list.

I shuffled around the house, gathering sheets from this room and handpicking same-color clothes from that pile, and shoved my findings into the washer. I selected "large" for the load size, clicked the timer to "casuals," shut the lid and went about my happy way.

Less than an hour later I returned to the washer to move the load to the dryer, and when I lifted the lid, there it was. A wet, soppy mess. Mr. Spin Cycle had abandoned me, kicking me in the stomach when I was already down for the count, just one week after I'd rebounded from Mr. Toilet checking out to the tune of 600 dollars in repairs and a replacement. I mean, c'mon.

I tried the various "I'm-a-homeowner-but-that-doesn't-mean-I-know-what's-going-on" tricks: opening and shutting the lid, frantically searching the perimeter of the tub for some hidden magical switch and, of course, shaking the entire machine.

It was actually a pretty sad sight, as the only troubleshooting to which I'm accustomed involves force-quitting my e-mail program or rebooting my Mac.

After my roommate came home and surveyed the situation, we both leapt into action, doing what we each felt was our only remaining option. She called her dad, and I rummaged through my files to see if I could find the warranty.

It turned out that she, even with her dad's advice, couldn't find the hidden magical switch either, so I did a search for General Electric's web site.

I found the FAQs page in the Support section and scrolled through the list of choices, trying to find the description that best fit my particular service problem. I quickly found that I was not alone in my predicament because in the top tier of the help topics was the link "My Washer Does Not Spin."

Click.

What I found may as well have been my horoscope in the free weekly newspaper. The information was vague, but yet I still felt like everything applied directly to my situation. It read almost like a self-help guide about how to keep one's head in any given stressful situation.

Wait for a few minutes because pauses of up to three minutes may occur between cycles as the timer advances in steps.
Translation by the stars: Take ten deep breaths before you blow a gasket, you overreactor.

Check your house fuses, circuit breakers and the wall outlet. A loss of electrical power to the washer will cause a failure to spin. To check for power at the wall outlet, carefully plug a small table lamp or hair dryer into the wall outlet and turn it on. If it does not work, you may have blown a fuse, tripped a circuit breaker or have a defective wall outlet.
Translation by the stars: Take a step back, look beyond symptoms and try to identify the real stressor at hand. A loss of power in one area of your life can throw things off balance, causing a disruption in other areas. Often you can glean the most effective solution by examining the context of a particular emotion.

Make sure washer lid is down.
Translation by the stars: Don't miss the obvious by being oblivious.

Advance timer slightly to make sure timer was not in a pause mode.
Translation by the stars: Look to the future for perspective now. Will this matter in a day, a week or 10 years? Most of the time, the answer is "no." Sometimes people stagnate by focusing so hard on what's wrong in the present moment that they cannot conceive the possibility of a silver lining.

If machine pumps water out and you are positive that the motor is running, but tub is not spinning, then the problem is mechanical involving a clutch, belt or possibly the transmission and will require service.
Translation by the stars: Lady, you better keep looking for your warranty AND your original receipt. If you think your life is in working order, but you find yourself taking advice from the General Electric web site, you require some professional help.

At any rate, luckily I'm just 10 months into my washer's one-year warranty, so until the washer repair people make a service call, I guess I'll have to wait to throw in the towel.

I wonder if they charge extra for palm readings.

Featured Book: Radical Careering by Sally Hogshead

Do you have a career worth loving? Do you cringe at the idea of a mindless job spent shuffling papers and sneaking out at 4:59? Do you want joy and meaning from work? Do you want to kickstart momentum, attack bigger possibilities and get excited about Monday mornings? If so, welcome. You're among friends.

Radical Careering doesn't function like the usual career book. Don't just read this book. Use it.

Careering:
Careering is the profound, and glorious, and terrifying, and absurdly difficult but infinitely rewarding process of transforming your current self into your ultimate self.

Jeannette's Rec:
My friend Eric told me about this book when I was visiting a friend in Louisville. He told me to buy the book before I got on the airplane to come home the following day. He guaranteed that it would be a "quick read" and that it was "really, really, really cool."

His raving was right on the money.

When I got to the airport, I made a beeline for the airport bookstore, and I saw the bold black, red and white cover, sitting atop a sign that read "#2" among the business bestsellers. I'd read the thing from cover to cover by the time the airplane touched down at the XNA airport.

The author Sally Hogshead is insightful, clever and creative--a real self-starter with a good sense of humor and the kind of determination that comes only from picking oneself up time and again despite an onslaught of adversity.

The book is set up in a magazine-type format with helpful Dummies-like icons and with eyecatching photography and professional graphics--guaranteed to hold the attention of even the most easily distracted.

The book also includes great information from the Radical 1000 Research Study, a survey that polled 1000 active, lively "careerists" on present-day attitudes, priorities and beliefs of professionals like you and me.

Get ready to take on Sally's hard-earned "radical truths" along with Action ("caffeinated activities to put truths into action"), Insight ("Expert tips, insider ideas and fresh-squeezed innovation") and Inspiration ("encouragement with just a hint of butt-kicking").

It's a fun read, and I hope you enjoy it. Click below to order your copy today.

Mother to Mother Ministry of NWA

Do you know about Mother to Mother Ministry of NWA? Currently I am working with 84 single and low-income mothers to provide them with friendship and support on their journey to self sufficiency. Each mother gets encoragement and enrichment through our one on one mentoring program and our monthly Reflection Meetings. She also recieve a feeling of accomplishment by following our easy to use goal sheet. She has the opportunity to earn "mommy dollars" to use for diapers, toilet paper, make up, clothing and other items the community donates to our program. Mother to Mother has been serving NWA for 14 years now. We are looking forward to another 14 years.

We would like to invite you to join our wonderful team of mentors, board memebers, or sponsors. We currently are looking for women who have a desire to make a difference and make a great friend. Board Meetings are held the 4th Tuesday of every month, starting at 5pm. Mentors duties include, listening, encouraging, and being a friend. You have to remember that it will only take about 10 hours per month because the majority of my "moms" are just as busy as you. Sponsorships are what Mother to Mother continue. We have 3 upcoming events that are very important and can not be successful without your help.

Oct. 8th - Mother to Mother annual "meet and greet picnic" will be held at Park Springs Park on SW 10th street in Bentonville from 1pm to 3pm, if you would like to attend or would like to donate a door prize please let me know, we'd love to have you as a part of this event.

Nov. 19th is our annual Thanksgiving dinner. We are still looking for someone to sponsor our dinner, as well as door prizes for this event. Perhaps you have a church group who would love to cook a dinner for atleast 75. This will be the only thanksgiving dinner most of these families will have. We like to make it a wonderful day for our moms and their children. If you would like to help with this event please let me know.

Dec. 17th is our annual Christmas Celebration. Each year we make a goodie bag for our moms and each child gets a gift from Santa, who attends our party. We sing, make crafts, and enjoy dinner among all our families at Mother to Mother. This year we are seeking help with our Christmas dinner, as well as atleast 100 "mommy" gifts and toy donations (new or gently used). Most of our moms will not recieve a gift this year for christmas so we like to do something special for them for all their hard work and dedication to their children. We also do door prizes at this event. If you would like to help with our Christmas Celebration please let me know.

Thank you so much for your time and consideration. Mother to Mother also mails a bimonthly newsletter with lots of interesting information, please let me know if you would like to be on our mailing list.

Please Help the "Breast Cancer Site"

Please tell 10 friends today; and tell them to tell 10 more. The Breast Cancer site is having trouble getting enough people to click on their site daily to meet their quota for donating at least one free mammogram each day to an underprivileged woman.

It takes only a few seconds to go to their site and click on "donating a mammogram" (the rectangular pink button in the middle). There's no financial obligation; it doesn't cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate mammograms in exchange for advertising. Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know:

If it doesn't send you to the site, please type this web site into your browser, or cut and past this URL into your browser: http://www.thebreastcancersite.com/

Friday, October 7th - Reception for Gibbs, Ross, & Lane

Out of Mind...Out of Sight...Out of Hand:
Recent Works by Gibbs, Lane, & Ross

Opening Reception - Friday, October 7th
Iris Arts is pleased to host an opening reception for "Out of Mind...Out of Sight...Out of Hand" on Friday, October 7th from 6 pm - 9 pm. Please join us in celebrating this new body of work by Marta Gibbs, Andy Lane, and Robert Ross.
About the Show...
October brings a blend of the imaginations, figures, and landscapes in the forms of oil pastels, paintings, prints and collage by artists Marta Gibbs, Andy Lane and Robert Ross.

Marta Gibbs, through her paintings and collage, "speaks" in visual poetry. Marta describes her pieces as "... ultimate and complete, each work needs to feel that I do not know how to take it further." She takes inspiration from translating both literature and the natural world to the surface of a piece.

Andy Lane has recently returned from Japan where he studied figures through paintings, sculpture, and printmaking. His current body of work reflects a blend of his Japanese and American training.

Robert Ross merges figures and landscapes through his oil pastels on wood. The grain of the wood allows Ross to build the oil pastels in a painterly way and to explore the connection between the figure and the natural world.

The show will hang October 7th - November 8th.

Chamber hosts premier Northwest Arkansas Job Fair

Begin: What are major Northwest Arkansas employers such as the Wal-Mart Distribution Centers, Bekaert Corporation, Tyson Foods and Glad Manufacturing telling the Rogers - Lowell Area Chamber Of Commerce? Specifically, more than 60% of major local employers recently surveyed indicated a low volume of qualified applicants for jobs, specifically due to lack of experience and education.

The new ChamberPRO initiative of the Rogers – Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce interviewed 44 individuals from 38 companies representing a total of 139,404 Northwest Arkansas employees. Preliminary findings included more than 70% ranking local workforce quality and stability as “low.”

The Rogers - Lowell Area Chamber Of Commerce responded to these demonstrated business community needs by organizing the premier Northwest Arkansas Job Fair on Wednesday, October 12, 2005 at Embassy Suites of Northwest Arkansas in Rogers.

Employers are encouraged to register as soon as possible to secure exhibition space at the Northwest Arkansas Job Fair. Potential vendors may also call ChamberPRO staff to discuss specific ways to make their participation both productive and efficient. Because the event is a service to the business community, the booth cost is extremely affordable. Additional details for both employers and job seekers are available by calling the Rogers – Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce at 479-636-1240 or at www.RogersLowell.com
