The Visual Journal: Observational Drawing for Journaling

In our modern culture, we have forgotten that observational drawing is a taught skill that was the primary way people visually communicated travels and ideas for centuries. Everyone drew to some extent, either to illustrate writing or communicate with the illiterate. All people of a certain social class were required to take drawing classes during the Victorian era to be able to share travel stories through visual and written journals. Teaching this method of drawing, otherwise known as the "academic method" has existed since the Renaissance, with the most famous examples being the notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci.
I have been teaching the academic method of drawing for nearly 20 years and can guarantee that participants will leave the class drawing better than when they came. I would love to offer this class to our members. If you are interested in taking an observational drawing for journaling class, please let us know. Would you be interested in a morning or evening class? And what days of the week would you be able to attend?

The class would be four sessions (2 or 3 hours each) (materials will be included) The cost will be $175-$200 per person.

SAVE GAS: Use www.nwacommute.com

Good morning,

It was good to talk to you on Monday. I find it hard to believe it's been over five years since I worked there.

I so appreciate you spreading the word about our site. Here are the details.

My husband and I have launched a site for Northwest Arkansas to help commuters find one another - both to save money on gas and help our environment. Our goal is to remove at least 1,000 cars from the road by 2009. If we succeed we will decrease the Northwest Arkansas carbon footprint by 3.8 million pounds. Whether you are driven by the money you will save, or the health of our planet this a place to connect. We have been on-line for only one week and already have over 70 members. I have already noticed a couple of posts for U of A commuters. If you cannot go without a car daily because of work commitments, but still want to make a difference you can offer space in your car in exchange for gas money. There is a calculator that will tell you how much per person with the correct variables filled in. The site is:

www.nwacommute.com

Please go sign up, and start saving for that summer vacation.

Thanks and happy commuting!

Why Is Fayetteville Public Safety One of Walt's Top Interest Areas?

The primary function of local government is to ensure the safety of its citizens. As Mayor I will be the chief executive officer for the city. I will be responsible for hiring, retaining and directing the city staff. Our police, firefighters and EMTs are our first responders. As the city population grows denser, annexes additional areas, grows up with more multi-story buildings and grows more diverse, our public safety strategies must change to meet the new conditions. The Mayor must work to assure citizens that, in the event of fire, accident, crime, illness, natural event or hazmat incident, our first responders are staffed, trained and equipped to meet the challenge.

A simple thing like expanding and connecting our trail system and parks requires a reallocation of resources to ensure that citizens are protected at all times. Growth will require additional resources and additional voter commitment.

Increased demands for public safety will require exceptional management skills, creativity and commitment. The Mayor must work closely with his staff to make the best judgments for the citizens. That is my experience in corporate business, and that is what I will bring to the office of Mayor.

Gas Tips

This is interesting and worth the read! From a guy who works with a petroleum company here are some tips on pumping gas.

I don't know what you guys are paying for gasoline....but here in California we are paying up to $4.23 per gallon. But my line of work has been in petroleum for about 31 years now, so here are some tricks to get more of your money's worth for every gallon.

Here at the Kinder Morgan Pipeline where I work in San Jose, CA we deliver about 4 million gallons in a 24-hour period thru the pipeline.

One day is diesel the next day is jet fuel, and gasoline, regular and premium grades. We have 34-storage tanks here with a total capacity of 16,800,000 gallons.

Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground the more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening....your gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products plays an important role.

A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.

When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode. If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3)stages:low, middle, and high. In slow mode you should be pumping on low speed, thereby minimizing the vapors that are created while you are
pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some other liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your money.

One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank is HALF FULL or HALF EMPTY. The reason for this is, the more gas you have in your tank the less air occupying its empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster than you can imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation. Unlike service stations, here where I work, every truck that we load is temperature compensated so that every gallon is actually the exact amount.

Another reminder, if there is a gasoline truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy gas, DO NOT fill up--most likely the gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom. Hope this will help you get the most value for your money.
