HAIRSPRAY, Broadway’s Big Fat Musical Comedy Hit, Dances its way to Walton Arts Center

NORTHWEST ARKANSAS, November 5, 2007- It’s time to let your hair down and dance the night away! HAIRSPRAY, Broadway’s musical comedy phenomenon that inspired a major motion picture, dances its way to Walton Arts Center’s Baum Walker Hall for eight performances starting Tuesday, November 13 and running through Sunday, November 18. Ticket prices range from $25 - $62, and performance times are Tuesday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 16 at 8 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 17 at 2p.m. and 8 p.m. and Sunday, Nov 18, at 2 p.m. and 7p.m. Tickets are available by calling the Walton Arts Center box office at 443-5600 or purchase tickets online at www.waltonartscenter.org.
This fantastically fun musical, winner of eight 2003 Tony Awards including Best Musical, is currently enjoying its 5th record-breaking year on Broadway. And now, the people of Northwest Arkansas will be swept away to 1960s Baltimore in this smash hit musical, piled bouffant-high with laughter and romance – and enough deliriously tuneful songs to fill a nonstop platter party. It’s HAIRSPRAY, live on stage in living color!
Everyone is raving about this delightful musical, including the critics. “A great big fat gorgeous hit,” claims Clive Barnes of the New York Post. “Completely irresistible! Get those tickets now!” declares syndicated columnist, Liz Smith. “So many numbers bring down the house, it’s a wonder the theater is still standing,” says Jeremy Gerard of New York Magazine.

In HAIRSPRAY it's 1962—the '50s are out and change is in the air. Baltimore's Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, has only one passion—to dance. She wins a spot on the local TV dance program, "The Corny Collins Show" and, overnight, is transformed from outsider to irrepressible teen celebrity. But can a plus-size trendsetter in dance and fashion vanquish the program's reigning princess, win the heart of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a television show without denting her 'do? Only in HAIRSPRAY! Welcome to the '60s!

HAIRSPRAY is based on the New Line Cinema film written and directed by John Waters, who served as a creative consultant on the musical comedy. It features a book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan. HAIRSPRAY features an original score by Academy Award-nominated Marc Shaiman (who co-wrote the music and lyrics for the acclaimed animated musical, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut) and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. This production of HAIRSPRAY is based on Jack O’Brien’s original direction and Jerry Mitchell’s original choreography, recreated by Matt Lenz and Danny James Austin, respectively. Scenic design is by David Rockwell; the set coordinator is Michael Allen; costume design is by William Ivey Long; lighting design is by Kenneth Posner and Paul Miller; the sound is by Shannon Slaton; wig and hair design is by Paul Huntley; and the musical supervisor is Lon Hoyt. HAIRSPRAY is produced by NETworks Presentations.
The New York Times says, "If life were everything it should be, it would be more like HAIRSPRAY! It's irresistible!" For more information about the musical visit www.hairsprayontour.com.

Media support for Hairspray is provided by 40/29 News and The Morning News. Hairspray is part of the Procter & Gamble Broadway Series. The Season sponsor for Walton Arts Center’ 2007-08 Series is Wal-Mart/SAM’S CLUB.

Please find the program description below:

The Grant Institute
Grants 101: Professional Grant Proposal Writing Workshop
will be held at the
University of Arkansas, Little Rock
Little Rock, Arkansas
December 3 - 5, 2007
8:00 AM - 5:00 PM

The Grant Institute's Grants 101 course is an intensive and detailed introduction to the process, structure, and skill of professional proposal writing. This course is characterized by its ability to act as a thorough overview, introduction, and refresher at the same time. In this course, participants will learn the entire proposal writing process and complete the course with a solid understanding of not only the ideal proposal structure, but a holistic understanding of the essential factors, which determine whether or not a program gets funded. Through the completion of interactive exercises and activities, participants will complement expert lectures by putting proven techniques into practice. This course is designed for both the beginner looking for a thorough introduction and the intermediate looking for a refresher course that will strengthen their grant acquisition skills. This class, simply put, is designed to get results by creating professional grant proposal writers.

Participants will become competent program planning and proposal writing professionals after successful completion of the Grants 101 course. In three active and informative days, students will be exposed to the art of successful grant writing practices, and led on a journey that ends with a masterful grant proposal.

Grants 101 consists of three (3) courses that will be completed during the three-day workshop.

(1) Fundamentals of Program Planning

This course is centered on the belief that "it's all about the program." This intensive course will teach professional program development essentials and program evaluation. While most grant writing "workshops" treat program development and evaluation as separate from the writing of a proposal, this class will teach students the relationship between overall program planning and grant writing.

(2) Professional Grant Writing

Designed for both the novice and experienced grant writer, this course will make each student an overall proposal writing specialist. In addition to teaching the basic components of a grant proposal, successful approaches, and the do's and don'ts of grant writing, this course is infused with expert principles that will lead to a mastery of the process. Strategy resides at the forefront of this course's intent to illustrate grant writing as an integrated, multidimensional, and dynamic endeavor. Each student will learn to stop writing the grant and to start writing the story. Ultimately, this class will illustrate how each component of the grant proposal represents an opportunity to use proven techniques for generating support.

(3) Grant Research

At its foundation, this course will address the basics of foundation, corporation, and government grant research. However, this course will teach a strategic funding research approach that encourages students to see research not as something they do before they write a proposal, but as an integrated part of the grant seeking process. Students will be exposed to online and database research tools, as well as publications and directories that contain information about foundation, corporation, and government grant opportunities. Focusing on funding sources and basic social science research, this course teaches students how to use research as part of a strategic grant acquisition effort.

Registration
$597.00 tuition includes all materials and certificates.

Each student will receive:
*The Grant Institute Certificate in Professional Grant Writing
*The Grant Institute's Guide to Successful Grant Writing

AYC Yoga Teacher Featured in National Magazine

Our very own Meredith Fields is featured in November’s edition of Natural Health Magazine! Find a copy at your local news stand, and check out pages 82 to 88. The article looks at links between exercise and emotional well-being by focusing on the lives of three individuals, one of whom is Meredith, and, wow! What a great photo! It captures the inner beauty and enthusiasm she brings to her teaching at AYC. Meredith is a graduate student in social work at the U of A. She teaches Teen Yoga on Monday afternoons, Restorative Yoga on Tuesday afternoons, and a Power Flow class on Wednesday afternoons at The Center. She did her yoga teacher training at AYC, and is now a certified VariYoga teacher. We are so proud of her!

The Arkansas Yoga Center got some press time in the article too! It mentions my TV Yoga show, the AYC Yoga Teacher Training Program, and the wonderful calming environment and community that Meredith found at the Arkansas Yoga Center. We’re glad you all are part of that community, and knew you’d want to hear about Meredith’s adventure into the national spotlight. Namaste’

Ozark Tracker Society November News

I hope this email finds you well and enjoying the steady arrival of a fantastic fall. We have been quite busy and were delighted to have run a wonderful Women's only workshop this past weekend. We should have some pictures posted on our website soon. It was an excellent group of women who, I should add, gave the best one-match fire performance we've seen yet! It was surely a hit and we will be running more Women's events in coming months. Below is a list of workshops we are running this November. We are limiting the class size of these workshops to insure a 5:1 participant to instructor ratio. You can register by responding to the Google Calendar invitation that you will receive or via our website.

Upcoming Classes:
Wilderness Survival Skills I- Emergency Situations up to 72hrs, 3 NOV
Wilderness Survival Skills II- Beyond 72hrs:Introduction to Wilderness Living/Primitive Skills, 4 NOV
Hunting Skills I with Eddie Starnater (see below)- 10-11 NOV

The Ozark Tracker Society is pleased to host Eddie Starnater as a guest instructor this November. A longtime practitioner of primitive and wilderness survival skills, Eddie was an instructor and subsequent Program Director of Tom Brown Jr.s Tracker School and has recently started his own program Practical Primitive LLC, in New Jersey.

The class will be held (9AM-6PM) November 10th and 11th and is limited to 10 students. I know you gun hunters out there are balking that it's opening weekend of modern gun, but this a great opportunity to acquire new and hone existing skills that will shed new light on your hunting experience and potential. This workshop will expose you to an approach to hunting that is holistic, ancient and an ancestral legacy to us all.
Course Description:

Hunting Skills 1

Whether you hunt with a longbow or with a camera, you'll learn how to closely observe an area and read the animal activity. We will explore camouflage, stalking, and other techniques that will allow you to approach the hunt in the sacred manner, and get much closer to game than you ever thought possible. To our ancestors the hunt was a sacred rite, and in many societies members of the tribe had to prove themselves worthy before being permitted to participate. In our modern world this connection with the "circle of life" has been all but lost. For those of you who wish to rekindle this connection, this class will help you to connect with an instinct that is too deep to describe.

NO ANIMALS WILL BE HARMED IN THIS CLASS!

**This is a custom course and any specific skill set that falls within the bounds of Primitive Hunting Skills can potentially be covered. Once registered, please submit questions or topics on which you would like to focus.

Procurement Event for Small Businesses

Business Matchmaking Announces Final Regional Event for 2007 to be Held in Little Rock, Arkansas December 11, 2007. The event is presented by Arkansas Host Committee and led by the Arkansas State Chamber of Commerce.

Business Matchmaking, the nation's leading public-private sector procurement program for small business, will complete its 2007 schedule with a South-Central Regional event on December 11 in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Originated by the U.S. Small Business Administration in cooperation with Hewlett Packard (HP), Business Matchmaking regional events are now presented by HP and a host of major national corporations committed to providing procurement opportunities to small business owners with particular emphasis on women, minority and veteran owned companies. The private sector leaders of Business Matchmaking are supported by SCORE, the SBA's resource partner providing counseling services.

Business Matchmaking has completed more than 50,000 face-to-face meetings between entrepreneurs and buyers from all federal agencies and several hundred major corporations. As a result of these selling opportunities for growing business, the program has facilitated $750M in contracts.

The day-long event in Little Rock will include a workshop and scheduled face-to-face meetings for more than 500 small businesses and some 150 US government, state and local agency and private corporation buyers.

"I am very pleased that Business Matchmaking has selected Arkansas as the venue to bring together nationwide corporate buyers to provide procurement opportunities to small businesses around the State. We are proud to partner with the Arkansas State Chamber of Commerce, the Arkansas Minority Business Development Roundtable, the Arkansas Economic Development Commission, and our congressional offices to ensure that small businesses in Arkansas are positioned to be more competitive." Governor Mike Beebe

In addition to the national sponsors of Business Matchmaking that include American Airlines, Alfac, FedEx and other leaders in their fields, there will be a pavilion for Arkansas regional organizations anxious to meet with the small businesses to pursue new relationships.

Registration for the South-Central Business Matchmaking regional event in Little Rock will open on October 1, 2007 at www.BusinessMatchmaking.com. Registration is free and requires a registration pass-code that may be obtained by calling 1-800-944-4762 after October 1, 2007. Economic Census Forms Coming Your Way

In December more than 4 million American businesses, including 3,300 businesses in Benton County, will receive 2007 Economic Census forms. Responses to the questionnaire are required by law (Title 13, U.S. Code), to be returned by February 12, 2008.

There is a special Web page at http://www.census.gov/econ/census07/ that tells about the Economic Census, and provide statistics businesses can use to assess and grow business operations. These data underscore why the responses are important! The Chamber has a brochure in the office for your review, that tells more about it.

Subject: Help needed for field trips
from Yvonne Richardson Center, Activites Director
**Dear Dolores,
We are needing some volunteers on November 19th and 20th to help
chaperone two field trips.

November 19, 2007 we are planning to take a group of kids from the YRCC to (hopefully) lunch and the Botanical Gardens. We will leave at 11am from the YRCC and then go to the Botanical Gardens,
returning to the center by 3:30pm.

November 21, 2007 we will go to the matinee showing at the new Malco on Joyce for the (hopefully) Mr Magoriums Magic Emporium movie. I think we will try to go to the 2:00 showing so leave the center at 1:30pm returning at 4:45 or 5:00pm.

If you know some adults (21 and older) that can pass a background check, handle some rowdy kids, and like to go to these places free of charge, get them in touch with me as soon as possible to come to the center and fill out the background check form.

Any help you can send, would be GREAT!
