Heifer Gifts Make Special Valentines

Dear Heifer Friend,

Still looking for the perfect Valentine’s Day present for that special someone? We’d like to remind you that Heifer gifts last far longer than chocolate or flowers. In fact, they bring health and hope to struggling families around the world.

And since every Heifer recipient agrees to “Pass on the Gift” of animals and training, your contribution will continue to make an impact for generations to come.

So, why not kiss hunger goodbye and honor your valentine with a Heifer gift? Your support is needed now more than ever.

Sincerely,

Ashley Michael

AR Green Valley Network Achievement

Green Valley Supporters:

For your information, the Fayetteville Economic Development Council, partners in the creation of the Green Valley Network, received a copy of a press release from the office of the out-going Swedish Ambassador Michael M. Wood. It listed the twelve most important achievements of the ‘One Big Thing’ during a farewell seminar hosted by Minister Maud Olofsson.

Number one on his list of 12 was Ageratec, a company that has visited Fayetteville. Number two on his list of successes was the Arkansas Green Valley Network!

This recognition would not have been possible without some forward-thinking and a leap of faith on the part of former Mayor Dan Coody, the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce and the FEDC Executive Board for supporting this out-of-the-box approach to economic development.

Celebrate International Women's Day!

Presented by WomenforWomen.org

To celebrate the strength and accomplishments of women, we invite you to join a Global Teleconference March 5. Global Program Executive Director Karen Sherman and Dr. Grace Fisiy, Agribusiness Specialist, will talk about what women in our program are doing to eradicate hunger in their countries.

The global food crisis has forced 100 million people into extreme poverty causing food prices and every day necessities to double over the past year. Families are left wondering where they’ll find the next meal.

But women are fighting back. In our Commercial Integrated Farming Initiative (CIFI) they are acquiring skills that will allow them to end the food crisis forever. They will learn how to use sustainable farming practices to grow crops that can help feed their families, earn an income and move from victim to survivor.

Celebrate.

Nightbird Books Local Economies Book Club

We are restarting our group discussion of books focusing on the importance of supporting our local economies. The goal of this group is to increase our factual knowledge of an issue that many of us intuitively feel is a good thing. I also hope that this group may ultimately be instrumental in promoting our newly formed Fayetteville Independent Business Alliance. At each meeting, we choose a book or two for future reads, so bring suggestions with you.

We will meet February 26th at 6:30. We will resume meeting the last Thursday of each month. This month's book is Small is Beautiful by E F Schumacher. Although it is not officially out of print, the publisher doesn't have any currently. I've checked and the Dickson Street Bookshop does have copies. If they run out, let me know and I'll help locate copies for you.

For Music Lovers in Little Rock

There's going to be a great concert in Little Rock on Thursday, February 19th at the Arkansas Flag & Banner. The band isn't well known in Little Rock, but they're one of the best old-time acoustic ensembles I've heard in a long time, and they put on a great live show. They're called Woody Pines and the Lonesome Two, with local favorite Parachoute Woman opening. In addition, it's an all ages show and a benefit concert for the Dreamland Ballroom, a historic music venue that some friends are trying to help re-open. Come support the cause!
Details:

Thursday, Feb 19th

Arkansas Flag and Banner (9th and State downtown)

Doors at 8pm, Show at 9pm

$5 cover, all ages

Beverages available

It's going to be a great show and a great cause.

Journal Project 2009

Hi everyone,
We are pleased to offer the journal project again for 2009. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn how to make a beautiful hand-sewn book, and it is also an opportunity to participate with others in documenting our everyday lives (see description below).

To sign up for Journal Project 2009, please email or call us before Monday, February 16. We hope to see you there!
Journal Project 2009

Instructor: Lesha Shaver
Cost: $105
Dates: February 21, 9a.m.-4p.m. (Saturday)
Level: Beginner

This project is intended for those who have never had success keeping a journal, those who want to take their journals up a notch or two, those who have any interest at all in the challenge of documenting their life in words, images, found or rescued objects (movie ticket stubs, locks of hair, cards, grocery lists, etc.). Be prepared to cut, glue, draw, write, fold, wrap, pop up, and cut out your daily life. Each participant will bind and personalize his/her very own extra large book. After binding the book, each student will receive monthly challenges for their day book. Class will meet quarterly to share techniques and inspire one another (participation in the yearlong workshop is optional). At the end of 2009, each of us will have an exquisite snapshot of our daily life captured in different mediums all contained in one book. All materials included in price.
