YouthCAN! Art Explosions Community Imagination Studio to Host Local Student Art Contest
SPRINGDALE, Ark. (January 22, 2007) - Calling all student artists! YouthCAN! Art Explosions Community Imagination Studio announced today it is holding a local student art contest in April. The contest is in partnership with the Winthrop Rockefeller Center of the University of Arkansas System’s 2nd Annual “Arts in the Air” statewide art contest. Students in Benton, Washington and Madison Counties will be exhibiting their work at the Art Explosions Community Imagination Studio and competing for a chance to display their work at the statewide “Arts in the Air” Festival at the Winthrop Rockefeller Center on Petit Jean Mountain in May.
The theme of this year’s contest is ART ALL AROUND US! Art is said to be in the eye of the beholder so this year Arkansas’ students have been challenged to look at their world through the eyes of an artist. By carefully observing all of the natural and other images that surround them every day, organizers think students will see that art really is in the air and everywhere.
Specifically, students have been asked to create a piece of artwork that reflects some part of the Arkansas they see every day such as a beautiful landscape, an unusual building or an interesting person. Students need to be able to explain briefly how the artwork was inspired by what they see around them every day. The contest is open to all Arkansas students – kindergarten through 12th grade. The art will be judged in grade based divisions and will be evaluated on representation of the theme, creativity, composition/design, craftsmanship and overall impression/visual effect.
Artwork from students in Benton, Washington and Madison Counties must be submitted to YouthCAN! Art Explosions Community Imagination Studio located at 3480 N. Thompson, Suite 3 in Springdale between March 1, 2007 and April 5, 2007. At the local contest, students will be competing to be named official finalists. The finalists’ artwork will be shipped to the Winthrop Rockefeller Center to be exhibited and judged as part of the statewide “Arts in the Air” Festival May 4-5, 2007. At the awards ceremony on May 5, cash prizes and ribbons will be awarded to the First, Second and Third Place winners in each division: grades K-2; grades 3-5; grades 6-8; grades 9-12. Honorable mentions will receive ribbons.
For information on the local contest please contact Dave Metzger or Barbara Price Davis at YouthCAN! Art Explosions Community Imagination Studio at 479-725-2456 or 479-927-2020. An entry packet with contest guidelines and an official entry form is available online at www.wrcenter.net.
