RECYCLING PILOT SAVING 3,700 POUNDS OF MATERIAL EACH WEEK
Green Heart Initiative Proving Successful Near Halfway Point; Press Conference Monday

First launched last May, the Green Heart Initiative nears its halfway point having collected more than 15,000 pounds of recyclable waste.

During Monday’s press conference at Roll Off Services’ facility in south Fayetteville, participating partners will get to see what happens to that waste once it’s collected.

“The pilot has proven to be very successful so far,” says Walt Eilers, candidate for Mayor for Fayetteville. “We’re proving the community can work together to tackle problems without having to commit taxpayer dollars to outside consultants.”

The pilot first began when Brandon Karn, owner of Jammin Java, approached the first three candidates for mayor—Jeff Koenig, Vice Mayor Lioneld Jordan, and Walt Eilers—asking what each would do to help bring a commercial recycling program to Fayetteville. The city currently offers no such program.

“I spoke with Aaron Stahl about the problem,” says Eilers. Stahl is a recent University of Arkansas graduate and owner of P3 Waste Consulting. “Aaron put together a plan and recommended Roll Off Services to handle collection. We took the idea to Roll Off, and they agreed to participate.”

Stahl and Eilers then took their plan to Karn and other local business owners to ask for their participation. Fifty-two local businesses and organizations agreed to participate in the pilot.

“More wanted to join,” says Eilers, “but we had to keep things manageable.”

The University of Arkansas chapter of Net Impact serves as an independent third party evaluating the pilot.

Monday’s press conference is scheduled for 10:00 am and will be held at Roll Off Services’ facility in Johnson (402 W. VAN ASCHE. JOHNSON, AR 72741).

Directions:

Take Gregg Street out toward the Mall.

Once you pass under the Fulbright Expressway look for the left turn at Van Asche at the traffic signal.

After you cross the railroad tracks take the next right into the fenced yard. Bear to your right to the metal building on the railroad spur.

“We’ll get to see what happens to all those glass and plastic bottles,” says Eilers.
