HealthyStock Youth Fitness & Speed Camp to be held at All-Star Sports Arena

AthletePlus Sports Performance & Physical Therapy along with All-Star Fitness will have a youth fitness camp for ages 6-9 and 10-14 starting July 30 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 1-5 pm. The purpose of the camp is to educate youth on fitness and nutrition by utilizing the concept of HealthyStock, a program started by physical therapist Chris Cothern of AthletePlus. “HealthyStock is a concept where youth learn to invest in their body by learning the benefits of exercise and nutrition. They are rewarded when they choose healthy options. We have this awesome facility at All-Star and wanted a program for youth that may not be involved in sports already. Many have heard the stats on the poor health of youth in Arkansas,” stated Cothern. For those already in sports, we will have speed camps for one hour a day to improve speed, jumping, and core strength. Cothern stated that investing in core strength and learning how to run at a young age can help you avoid the bad habits we see in older athletes. An advanced speed camp called Playmaker for ages 10-14 will include a DVD analysis of running form for you to take home. Females will learn knee injury prevention techniques that are important to learn at a young age according to Cothern. “An ACL repair can cost up to $25,000 and research has shown there are ways to assist in prevention,” added Cothern. AthletePlus’ Segway ACL program is approved by local team doctor Terry Sites.

During this camp, a dietician will conduct one session at the beginning of the camp, one in the middle, and one at the end of the camp with the parents and children. Parents may join the fitness center during the camp and receive discounts on personal training sessions. According to Cothern, all campers and parents who join the fitness center will receive a free injury evaluation from AthletePlus if they are ever injured. Campers will be given a pedometer to keep up with their activity levels. HealthyStock camp will have a beginning level of 11,000 steps for girls and 13,000 steps for boys.

AthletePlus has worked with college and pro athletes such as Todd Day, but works more with youth involved in all sports to become better athletes. Marcus Campbell, a former Razorback and current college strength coach assists with training along with Cothern. HealthyStock camp will cost $75 a week, $250 for full month and $350 per month for the Playmaker program and DVD analysis of running form.

The percentage of youth who are overweight has more than tripled in the past 30 years (USDHHS, 2002) and Arkansas has seen a 77% increase in obesity for 1991-2000. A 2002 survey showed 30% of youth and adults engaged in no leisure activity and many times overweight children grow into overweight adults. The CDC ranked Arkansas 8th in mortality due to heart disease and first in stroke mortality. A 10% weight reduction can help overweight adults reduce lifetime medical costs between $2,200 and $5,300. Cothern hopes the aforementioned stats will change with programs like HealthyStock. Working with all ages, AthletePlus will also have a Senior Wellness Day at All-Star Fitness Center on August 9 with more information to be released soon.
